Tesco Issues Urgent Recall of Free From Breadcrumbs Over Health Risk
Tesco has announced a recall of its own brand Free From Breadcrumbs due to the presence of wheat, which is not listed on the product label. This oversight could present a significant health risk to individuals with allergies or intolerances to wheat or gluten, as well as those diagnosed with coeliac disease.
The supermarket chain’s recall affects all 170-gram packs of the Free From Breadcrumbs, regardless of date or batch codes. According to the Food Standards Agency, anyone who has purchased this product is advised not to consume it. Instead, they should return it to any Tesco store for a full refund, with no receipt required.
Approximately one in 100 people in the UK is believed to suffer from coeliac disease, a condition in which the immune system reacts negatively to gluten, causing damage to the small intestine. Symptoms of gluten intolerance can include digestive problems such as bloating, diarrhoea, and constipation, while coeliac disease may also result in fatigue, weight loss, skin rashes, and infertility.
In a statement, Tesco expressed regret for any inconvenience this recall may cause to its customers, emphasizing that no other Tesco products are affected by this issue. The supermarket chain continues to prioritize customer safety and product integrity.
Gluten is commonly found in a wide range of foods, including pasta, cakes, breakfast cereals, and many types of bread. The condition itself arises from a combination of genetic predisposition and environmental factors, disrupting the body’s ability to absorb essential nutrients.
Customers are encouraged to remain vigilant regarding food labels, particularly if they have known allergies or intolerances. The Food Standards Agency has underscored the importance of returning the affected product to ensure safety and well-being.
