Experience Horror’s Lighter Side with Triplex’s October Lineup
The Triplex cinema is embracing the playful side of horror throughout October with its “Gorecore” series, showcasing films that blend humor and horror in unexpected ways. Kicking off the celebration, the quirky 1977 film, “House,” directed by Nobuhiko Obayashi, features a bizarre premise where a group of teenage girls encounters supernatural forces in a country estate. This film, renowned for its surreal elements, presents a unique viewing experience that encourages audiences to enjoy the absurdity of horror.
Obayashi’s “House” stands out not only for its unsettling atmosphere but also for its whimsical tone, which is reminiscent of a cheerful soda commercial. The film’s characters remain upbeat despite facing bizarre threats from demonic cats and killer pianos. This juxtaposition serves as a satirical commentary on societal pressures to maintain positivity, even in dire situations. As part of the “Gorecore” series, “House” is a prime example of how horror can be both entertaining and thought-provoking.
Special Events Highlighting Diverse Narratives
The month also features notable screenings that delve into various themes. “Eleanor the Great,” the directorial debut of Scarlett Johansson, tells the story of a 94-year-old woman, portrayed by June Squibb, who moves to New York City to live with her daughter. Eleanor’s journey of self-discovery takes a turn when she inadvertently claims her deceased friend’s Holocaust survival story as her own. This comedic exploration of grief and community will resonate with audiences when it screens in late October.
Following this, “Predators,” a documentary directed by David Osit, examines the sensational rise and fall of the infamous “To Catch a Predator” series. This film will provide insight into the cultural impact of reality television, playing for one week starting October 17.
The cinema will also spotlight classic films, beginning with “Point Blank,” directed by John Boorman. This neo-noir thriller features Lee Marvin in a gripping tale of revenge. The film will be shown on October 22 and 25 as part of the “New Hard-Boiled” series.
Celebrating Queer Cinema and Iconic Films
Continuing the diverse programming, the Queer Cinema Club will present “Beautiful Thing,” a landmark film that tells the story of two teenagers exploring their sexuality in a London housing project. The screening on October 23 will include an introduction by Michael Bolognino, ensuring a rich discussion about its cultural significance.
Adding to the excitement, Paul Thomas Anderson’s highly anticipated film, “One Battle After Another,” features a star-studded cast including Leonardo DiCaprio and Sean Penn. This action-packed narrative revolves around a former revolutionary’s quest to find his missing daughter. Critics are already hailing it as one of the best films of the year, making it a must-see during its run.
Upcoming films also include “Springsteen: Deliver Me from Nowhere,” which explores Bruce Springsteen’s introspective period while creating his acclaimed album “Nebraska.” This biographical film, featuring Jeremy Allen White, is set to screen starting October 24.
As the month progresses, audiences can look forward to the interactive midnight screening of “The Rocky Horror Picture Show,” featuring a preshow costume contest on October 25. This cult classic invites attendees to fully engage with its narrative, making it a highlight of the October lineup.
The Triplex cinema is committed to providing a platform for diverse storytelling and engaging experiences. With a mix of horror, comedy, and poignant narratives, the October programming invites audiences to explore the rich landscape of film in all its forms.
