Gregg Wallace Vies for Strictly Come Dancing Hosting Role
Gregg Wallace, the well-known presenter of MasterChef, has declared his candidacy to host the BBC’s flagship dance show, Strictly Come Dancing. Following the announcement of the departure of hosts Tess Daly and Claudia Winkleman, Wallace believes he is the ideal choice to take on this prominent role. He made his case in a statement released on October 24, 2025, highlighting his experience and public appeal.
Wallace asserts that his calendar is free and that he can commit fully to the show, which requires dedication and energy. He mentioned, “My schedule’s clear,” emphasizing that he is ready to step into the spotlight. He humorously noted that his only commitments involve brief meetings with his agent, allowing him ample time to prepare for the demanding role of hosting.
The presenter also emphasized his familiarity with the audience, claiming his presence could help ease the transition following the beloved duo’s exit. Wallace referenced his viral fame from the “buttery biscuit base” moment, suggesting that viewers would quickly embrace him as the new host. He proposed that he would benefit from a co-host to balance his energetic style, suggesting Huw Edwards as a potential partner.
In discussing his qualifications, Wallace acknowledged that he does not possess formal culinary training, despite hosting MasterChef for two decades. He argued that his charisma and relatability would compensate for any lack of traditional skills. “I could have two left feet for all I know, but my loveable working-class charisma will be enough to carry Strictly,” he stated, demonstrating his confidence in his ability to engage with viewers.
Wallace also addressed the potential for controversy that comes with hosting a high-profile show. He pointed to his experience with public relations challenges during his time on MasterChef, particularly regarding the dismissal of his former co-host, John Torode, for inappropriate remarks. He claimed that his resignation in solidarity with Torode showcased his integrity and reliability for the Strictly role.
Another point raised by Wallace was the importance of representation in broadcasting. He argued that hiring an autistic host would send a positive message about inclusivity within the BBC. “Not hiring me would look like discrimination,” he asserted, positioning his candidacy as not just a personal ambition but also a step toward greater diversity in media.
As Wallace prepares for this potential career move, the public and BBC executives will undoubtedly weigh his experience, charisma, and the impact of his potential appointment on the show’s future.
With the departure of Tess Daly and Claudia Winkleman leaving a significant gap, Wallace’s proposal adds a new layer of excitement to the ongoing discussions about the future of Strictly Come Dancing. Whether the BBC will embrace his candidacy remains to be seen, but Wallace’s enthusiastic bid for the role has certainly captured attention.
