Paul Mescal Praises Josh O’Connor’s Talent in New Film

Paul Mescal has expressed his deep admiration for co-star Josh O’Connor, stating that his respect for O’Connor “extended tenfold” during the filming of their new movie, The History Of Sound. The film, set in 1917 and post-First World War, follows the characters Lionel, played by Mescal, and David, portrayed by O’Connor, as they embark on a journey to record folk songs across rural Maine in the winter of 1920.

At a recent screening of The History Of Sound held at the BFI London Film Festival, Mescal shared his thoughts with the PA news agency. He remarked, “We’re here to celebrate the film, and it’s exciting. I mean we were friends before, for sure, but I think this experience of shooting with him, and the admiration that I have for Josh extended tenfold after working with him.” Mescal described their friendship as a joy, noting that spending time with O’Connor was as delightful as he had imagined.

Mescal further elaborated on his passion for traditional Irish music, emphasizing its profound impact on him. He drew parallels to the vibrant experience of listening to musicians in a pub in Ireland, stating, “It’s just an amazing experience.”

O’Connor, who is 35 years old, reciprocated the praise, describing Mescal as a “brilliant actor.” He emphasized the ease of their collaboration, mentioning their familiarity with each other and the script. “We knew each other well enough before, and we knew this script so well that there was a kind of a shorthand between us, knowing what we’re focused on really,” O’Connor explained.

The two actors also discussed the emotional connection music can create. O’Connor highlighted how certain albums, such as Jeff Buckley’s album Grace, can evoke specific memories and feelings. “Music can transport you to a particular place, to specific memory, even this idea of synaesthesia,” he noted.

Directed by Oliver Hermanus, The History Of Sound is set to be released in UK cinemas on January 23, 2024. The film promises to showcase not only the rich historical context but also the deep personal connections formed through shared experiences in music and friendship.
