Belfast’s Student Life Explored in New Comedy Film The UnHolylands
A new comedy film titled The UnHolylands is set to premiere in cinemas across Northern Ireland on October 3, 2023. The film offers a humorous and relatable glimpse into student life in the iconic Holylands area of South Belfast. It follows brothers Michael, portrayed by Ciaran McCourt, and Scott, played by Peter Jeffries, as they attempt to throw one final house party before the responsibilities of adulthood take hold.
Directed by Paddy Duffy, a filmmaker from Enniskillen, The UnHolylands has been described as the culmination of a four-year passion project. The film had its world premiere at the Belfast Film Festival last year, where it received critical acclaim for its authentic portrayal of the chaotic student experience.
The storyline revolves around Michael and Scott’s ambitious party plans, which are thwarted when their strict father discovers their intentions. He prohibits any further celebrations and assigns his uptight assistant to monitor them closely. This sets off a series of comedic events as the brothers scramble to execute their party without their father’s knowledge.
Adding to the film’s appeal, James Nesbitt appears as an exaggerated version of himself, accompanied by cameos from notable figures in Northern Irish culture, including singer Nathan Carter and boxer Tyrone McKenna. These appearances contribute local flavor and humor to an already vibrant narrative of youth and rebellion.
Filmed on location in Belfast’s distinctive student neighborhoods, The UnHolylands delivers an “authentic and affectionately chaotic portrait” of the shared houses, street parties, and unforgettable experiences that have defined generations of students.
Duffy expressed his intention for the film, stating, “I wanted to create a film that felt real, raw, and ridiculously funny, something that anyone who’s lived in or passed through the Holylands could relate to. It’s messy, it’s mad, and it’s full of heart.”
The film promises not only to entertain but also to resonate with anyone familiar with the vibrant and chaotic nature of student life in Belfast. For updates on screening locations and times, fans are encouraged to follow local social media channels.
As the excitement builds ahead of its release, The UnHolylands stands as a testament to the spirit of youth and the unforgettable moments that shape our lives.
