A ground-breaking ceremony has marked the official start of construction for the new Bridgwater Community Diagnostic Centre, a facility that will enhance healthcare access for residents in Bridgwater and the wider Somerset region. The project, which has secured conditional planning approval, is set to open its doors to patients in early summer 2026. This ambitious initiative represents a significant investment of £17.8 million aimed at improving diagnostic and outpatient services.

Located in Bridgwater, the centre will provide a comprehensive range of services designed to deliver care closer to home. Equipped with two CT scanners, two MRI scanners, four outpatient rooms, and two echocardiography/ultrasound suites, the facility is poised to significantly boost local diagnostic capacity. The partnership between Ergéa UK, Somerset NHS Foundation Trust, and Actiform Ltd has been instrumental in bringing this project to fruition, allowing for a one-stop service that addresses both routine and specialist imaging needs.

Patients will benefit from improved access to essential services, including cardiac and cancer imaging, as well as outpatient clinics. This initiative aims to reduce waiting times, support earlier diagnoses, and enhance patient outcomes across the community.

Community Impact and Expertise

Mark Graves, Director of Operations at Ergéa UK, emphasized the importance of collaboration in this project. “This important project is a clear example of how innovation and collaboration can come together to benefit patients in Bridgwater,” he stated. Graves highlighted that the new centre is designed to create a modern, state-of-the-art diagnostic environment that enhances patient experiences and helps the NHS tackle waiting list backlogs.

Adam Turner, Head of Imaging at Somerset NHS Foundation Trust, expressed enthusiasm about the new opportunities the diagnostic centre will bring. “Both our radiology team and I are really excited about the opportunities to bring complex imaging into the community,” he noted. Turner explained that the advanced equipment planned for the centre will allow for complex CT and MRI scans that previously could only be performed at larger hospitals. This facility will not only alleviate pressure on existing hospital scanners but will also provide an exceptional patient experience, with its central location and accessible transport links.

Advancing Healthcare Infrastructure

Stefan Dransfield, Managing Director at Actiform Ltd, shared his pride in contributing to the development of the Bridgwater Community Diagnostic Centre. He remarked, “This exciting new project marks another step forward in delivering high quality, bespoke off-site engineered buildings that bring vital diagnostic services closer to home.” Dransfield added that the completed centre will enhance access to healthcare, reduce waiting times, and facilitate earlier diagnoses for the local population.

The Bridgwater Community Diagnostic Centre represents a significant advancement in healthcare infrastructure for the region, demonstrating a collaborative commitment to improving health services. With its cutting-edge facilities and patient-focused design, the centre is set to transform the healthcare landscape in Bridgwater and throughout Somerset.
