Celebrity Stylist Warns Against Viral TikTok Holiday Hair Trends

As holiday season approaches, celebrity hairstylist Adem Oygur has issued a warning about potentially damaging hair trends circulating on TikTok. While some viral hacks can be beneficial, many are detrimental to maintaining healthy hair, especially during summer vacations. The stylist cautions that practices such as brushing wet hair aggressively or tying it tightly after swimming can lead to long-term damage.
The influence of social media has led to a surge in hair care “hacks,” with countless videos showcasing unconventional methods, including sock curls and underwater detangling techniques. Oygur, who has styled celebrities like Rosie Huntington-Whiteley, emphasizes that while some of these trends can be harmless or even advantageous, others may have adverse effects.
Key Hair Care Mistakes While Traveling
One of the most critical missteps vacationers make is failing to rinse their hair after swimming. Oygur highlights the importance of immediately washing hair with fresh water after exposure to chlorine or saltwater. He explains, “This simple step preserves softness, shine, and elasticity, making a significant difference in the long-term health of your hair.” Not rinsing can lead to moisture loss and damage, particularly for those who invest in colour treatments.
Another common error is overwashing. While it’s crucial to cleanse hair after swimming, excessive washing can strip the scalp of natural oils. “Good hair care is about balance,” Oygur advises. “Instead of daily washing, use a gentle routine tailored to your hair type. Supplementing with dry shampoo can keep hair looking fresh without risking dryness or frizz.”
Protecting Hair from Sun and Water Damage
The sun can be particularly harsh on hair, leading to dryness and brittleness. Laura Sutcliffe, HELLO!’s Fashion and Beauty News Editor, points out that many holidaymakers neglect proper sun protection for their hair. “The sun is so drying on your hair, making it coarse and crispy,” she warns. To mitigate damage, she recommends tying hair back and applying a leave-in conditioner to nourish and protect against sun exposure.
Traveling abroad often introduces individuals to hard water, which can dull and damage hair. Oygur suggests bringing a portable shower filter or using a chelating shampoo to combat the mineral buildup. “This ensures that even while indulging in travel, your hair remains as glossy and healthy as it would at home,” he explains.
Lastly, tying hair up while wet can lead to breakage. Hair is at its most vulnerable when wet, and securing it with tight elastics can cause significant damage. Oygur recommends allowing hair to air dry before tying it up and using silk scrunchies or clips that do not pull on the hair.
By being mindful of these common pitfalls, holidaymakers can ensure their hair remains healthy and vibrant during their travels. Taking simple precautions and avoiding damaging trends can make all the difference in maintaining that sun-kissed glow.
