Expert Shares Quick Method to Relieve Nasal Congestion
As winter sets in, many individuals grapple with nasal congestion linked to colder weather. While pharmacies offer a variety of conventional treatments, many people are turning to alternative remedies shared widely on social media. Among these voices is Dr. Ben Horning, a chiropractor and applied kinesiologist from the Horning Chiropractic and Acupuncture Centre in Laguna Hills, California. He recently demonstrated a technique on the platform TikTok that promises quick relief for a blocked nose.
In the TikTok video, Dr. Horning enthusiastically explains his method: “Feeling stuffy? I’m a chiro, I’ll show how to unblock it. Grab your nose and pull it, thumb goes inside the cheekbone, and push it.” This straightforward approach has garnered attention, with viewers expressing varied reactions. One user remarked, “It actually works,” while another commented, “Why did that just work?” Dr. Horning humorously responded, “Chiro magic!” However, not everyone experienced success with this technique, as some viewers noted it did not help their congestion.
Understanding Nasal Congestion
According to the NHS, several factors can contribute to a blocked nose, including the common cold and sinusitis, which is often caused by infection. The NHS states, “It’s common and usually clears up on its own within four weeks. But medicines can help if it’s taking a long time to go away.” Sinusitis, particularly, can follow a cold or flu and presents symptoms such as pain, swelling, and tenderness around the cheeks, eyes, or forehead. Other signs include a congested or runny nose, decreased sense of smell, and thick yellow or green mucus.
Individuals suffering from a blocked nose may also experience headaches, toothaches, bad breath, and a feeling of pressure in the ears. While these symptoms can often be managed at home, consulting a healthcare professional is advisable if symptoms persist or worsen.
Medical Advice and Treatment Options
Pharmacists can offer guidance on effective medications, including decongestant nasal sprays. It is important to note that such products are not suitable for children under six years old. An alternative method involves using saltwater nasal sprays or solutions to rinse the nasal passages, which may help alleviate congestion.
Should concerns about a blocked nose or flu symptoms arise, or if symptoms show no signs of improvement, individuals are encouraged to seek advice from qualified medical professionals. This ensures that any underlying issues are appropriately addressed, providing peace of mind during the winter months.
As the winter season progresses, awareness of effective treatments for common ailments like nasal congestion remains essential. Whether through traditional methods or innovative techniques shared online, relief is often within reach.
