Graham Thorpe’s Struggles with Mental Health Before Tragic Death

An inquest into the death of former England cricketer Graham Thorpe revealed troubling details about his mental health struggles leading up to his tragic passing. Thorpe, who died on August 4, 2024, after being struck by a train at a railway station in Surrey, had previously expressed a desire to end his life, asking his wife, Amanda Thorpe, for assistance. The ongoing inquest at Surrey Coroner’s Court has highlighted the depth of his depression and the challenges he faced after losing his job as a batting coach in 2022.
The court heard that Thorpe had missed several mental health appointments and had experienced a significant decline in his mental well-being. During a consultation, he reportedly told a healthcare professional that he “didn’t see the point of being here.” In a particularly distressing moment, he had asked his wife to help him end his life in the weeks leading to his death.
Dr. Amirthalingam Baheerathan, a consultant psychiatrist, provided insights into Thorpe’s mental health history. He stated that Thorpe had been diagnosed with moderate depressive disorder and described his condition as “fluctuating.” Notably, there were periods when he experienced severe depression, including a meeting in April 2023 when he mentioned “active suicidal thoughts.”
The inquest revealed that Thorpe had attempted to take his own life on at least one prior occasion. Despite these alarming signs, Dr. Baheerathan assessed that Thorpe did not present an imminent risk during consultations, which led to a lack of urgent intervention when appointments were missed. Thorpe’s care coordinator, Katie Johnson, also testified that she believed a two-week wait for his next appointment was acceptable, given that he had expressed intent to attend.
During his career, Thorpe was a significant figure in English cricket, playing from 1993 to 2005 and later serving in coaching roles. He achieved 16 Test centuries and represented his country 182 times across all formats. However, his mental health suffered severely after a public incident during a tour in Australia, where a private video was leaked, causing him great distress and leading to his eventual termination from the England and Wales Cricket Board.
Amanda Thorpe described this period as a “horrible” time for her husband, noting that the loss of his coaching position marked the beginning of a downward spiral in his mental health. The inquest is ongoing, highlighting the urgent need for better mental health support for individuals in high-pressure positions, especially in the world of sports.
The findings from the inquest into Graham Thorpe’s death serve as a somber reminder of the critical importance of mental health awareness and the necessity of comprehensive support systems for those in distress.
