Jennifer Lawrence Shares Candid Thoughts on Emma Stone’s Bold Haircut

Jennifer Lawrence recently expressed her honest feelings regarding her close friend Emma Stone’s dramatic haircut for the upcoming film Bugonia. In an interview with Vogue, Lawrence revealed her initial disapproval when Stone decided to shave her head for the role of a pharmaceutical CEO kidnapped by conspiracy theorists, played by Jesse Plemons and Aidan Gillen. The film is set to premiere in October 2024.
“I really didn’t want her to shave her head,” Lawrence stated, referencing her own experience with a similar haircut for the film Battle of the Sexes, where Stone portrayed tennis legend Billie Jean King. Lawrence recounted her memories of that time, noting, “I had already lived through the Billie Jean King haircut.”
Before making the drastic change, Stone experienced an emotional moment, recalling her mother, Krista, who lost her hair during a battle with breast cancer. “She actually did something brave,” Stone reflected. “I’m just shaving my head.” Despite Lawrence’s initial reservations, Stone embraced her new look, stating, “There’s no better feeling in the world. The first shower when you’ve shaved your head? Oh my God, it’s amazing.”
As she spent more time with her friend sporting the new style, Lawrence’s perspective shifted. “Honestly, she looked beautiful. She pulled it off,” she admitted, showcasing the deep bond that allows the two to be radically honest with one another.
From Rivals to Best Friends
Lawrence and Stone’s friendship dates back to 2015, when their paths crossed frequently during auditions for similar roles. Before they became friends, the two actresses were fierce competitors. In 2011, both were nominated for Golden Globe Awards—Lawrence for her performance in Winter’s Bone and Stone for Easy A. “I auditioned for Easy A. I wanted it so bad,” Lawrence shared with The Hollywood Reporter in 2017.
Their rivalry transformed into a supportive friendship after Stone reached out to Lawrence. Reflecting on this shift, Lawrence joked, “If I weren’t her biggest fan, I would’ve Tonya Harding’d her in the kneecaps.” The pair have since made several public appearances together, including a memorable interview for W Magazine, where they discussed the joys and chaos of their friendship.
At the most recent Golden Globes, both actresses were once again nominated. Lawrence received recognition for her role in the comedy No Hard Feelings, while Stone was nominated for her performance in Poor Things. As the camera focused on Lawrence just before the winners were announced, she was seen mouthing, “If I don’t win, I’m leaving!” Stone ultimately won the award, and Lawrence stood up enthusiastically to cheer her on.
Following the ceremony, Lawrence had the honor of presenting Stone with her second Oscar for her performance in Poor Things. “In true [Emma] form, as soon as we got offstage, we ran into the bathroom to scream and cry,” Lawrence recounted to PEOPLE. She added, “I whispered, ‘Two-time best-actress winner,’ and [Emma] replied, ‘I feel like that’s bad, though.'”
The candid exchange between Lawrence and Stone highlights a friendship built on mutual support and honesty, proving that their bond has only grown stronger over the years.
