Kneecap Calls Out Politicians During Electric Picnic Performance

Kneecap, the Belfast-based rap trio, captivated a large audience during their performance at the Electric Picnic festival in Stradbally, Co Laois, on September 1, 2023. Despite heavy rain showers, the group took to the main stage at 15:30 local time, attracting thousands of fans eager to enjoy their energetic set. The festival is expected to draw around 80,000 attendees over the weekend.
During their performance, Kneecap addressed pressing global issues, specifically the situation in Palestine and the role of Irish politicians. Frontman Mo Chara, also known as Liam Ó hAnnaidh, spoke passionately about the plight of Palestinians, stating: “We’re all here enjoying ourselves and we’re privileged to be able to do that in a field with our best friends. But our brothers and sisters in Palestine are under tremendous f****** pressure right now.” He emphasized the need for action from elected representatives, criticizing the inaction of political leaders: “Netanyahu is a war criminal. It’s about time politicians started doing something about it.”
The trio did not hold back in their criticism of the Irish government. Ó hAnnaidh called out both Fianna Fáil and Fine Gael, linking their policies to the ongoing housing crisis in Ireland while demanding accountability for their lack of response to the situation in Palestine. He concluded with an expletive-laden remark directed at Micheál Martin, the Taoiseach of Ireland.
Prior to the festival, Melvin Benn, the festival director, stated that Kneecap would not face censorship during their performance. He acknowledged the band’s important messages, asserting, “Mics won’t be switched off. They’ve got really important songs… they didn’t do anything wrong at Glastonbury.” This decision reflects a commitment to artistic expression, allowing the band to address controversial topics on a prominent platform.
Kneecap’s Electric Picnic performance followed a homecoming show at the Belfast Vital festival, where they opened for Fontaines DC. At this event, Ó Cairealláin, another member of the group, expressed their unique relationship with the Democratic Unionist Party (DUP), stating: “You couldn’t pay for the PR the DUP give Kneecap.” He further remarked, “We owe the DUP our career. Well, this is our public thanks to the DUP, you simple c***ts.”
The band also directed their criticisms toward the Alliance Party, suggesting that their alignment with the DUP raised questions about their integrity. Ó Cairealláin urged the audience to reconsider the Alliance Party’s position: “If they’re on the same side as the DUP, there must be something wrong with the Alliance Party.”
Kneecap’s willingness to engage with political issues during their performances highlights the intersection of music and activism, resonating with audiences that seek not just entertainment, but also a platform for social commentary. Their bold statements at Electric Picnic contribute to an ongoing dialogue about the responsibilities of artists in addressing global issues.
