Major Road Closure Initiates 25-Mile Diversion in Cambridge

Starting next week, a significant road closure will impact traffic heading into Cambridge. The closure of Barton Road (A603) will facilitate the widening and upgrading of the walking and cycling path, a project set to enhance safety and accessibility for pedestrians and cyclists. The work will commence on August 11, 2024, and is expected to continue overnight for approximately 21 weeks, concluding on January 5, 2026.
The planned improvements are part of the Barton Greenway initiative, designed to create a safer and more attractive route for active travel between Barton and Cambridge. The construction will take place overnight from 20:00 to 06:00, during which time Barton Road will be closed to ensure the project is completed efficiently. A signed diversion, approximately 25 miles long, has been established, directing traffic through Croydon and Royston before returning to Cambridge via Harston and Trumpington. The diversion will take between 35 and 50 minutes to complete.
Each morning, the road will be reopened to two lanes, minimizing disruption during daytime hours. For pedestrians and cyclists, a temporary path will be provided to allow continued access while the main route is under construction. Additionally, one lane on the A603/M11 roundabout will be closed, and a temporary 30 mph speed limit will be enforced to ensure safety for all road users.
Thomas Fitzpatrick, Head of the Greater Cambridge Partnership (GCP) programme, emphasized the importance of these upgrades. “Our greenways are designed to make active travel safer and more attractive for everyone,” he stated. “The aim is to give people choice in how they move, whether they are traveling to Cambridge or visiting a nearby village.” Fitzpatrick acknowledged the inconvenience this closure may cause, thanking local residents, businesses, and parish councils for their patience during this important project.
Upon completion, the Barton Greenway will feature a wider shared-use path with improved drainage, ensuring usability in all weather conditions throughout the year. The enhancements will also provide better separation between the walking/cycling path and vehicle traffic, contributing to a safer environment for all users. The overall goal of the GCP’s Greenways initiative is to establish better connections between approximately fifty surrounding villages and Cambridge, through creating new paths, improved crossings, and safer streets.
As the construction progresses, authorities encourage the public to stay informed about updates and changes to traffic patterns. The enhancements to Barton Road are expected to significantly enhance the experience of those travelling on foot or by bicycle, aligning with broader efforts to promote sustainable transport in the region.
