NCDC Confirms No Ebola Cases in Nigeria, Urges Vigilance
The Nigeria Centre for Disease Control and Prevention (NCDC) has reassured the public that there is currently no outbreak of Ebola Virus Disease (EVD) in Nigeria. This announcement follows the confirmation of a new outbreak in the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC), where authorities reported 28 suspected cases and 15 fatalities, including four health workers, as of September 4, 2025.
In response to the situation in the DRC, the NCDC has intensified surveillance at borders and points of entry. Hospitals across Nigeria are also being bolstered to enhance infection prevention and control measures. The agency emphasized the importance of early recognition and isolation of potential EVD cases, stating that “early recognition, isolation of patients, and supportive treatment reduce the risk of death.”
Health officials are urging Nigerians to adhere to strict hygiene practices and to avoid contact with individuals exhibiting symptoms such as fever, diarrhea, or unexplained bleeding. Additionally, the NCDC advises against the consumption of bushmeat, which can pose a risk of transmission.
Health Workers and Vigilance
Health workers have been cautioned to maintain a high level of suspicion regarding EVD and to follow established prevention protocols rigorously. They are encouraged to report any suspected cases immediately to health authorities.
The approved Ebola Zaire vaccine, Ervebo, is available, and response teams supported by the World Health Organization (WHO) have been deployed in the DRC to manage the outbreak. Travellers arriving in Nigeria from affected areas are advised to self-report any symptoms that may develop within 21 days of their arrival by contacting the NCDC’s toll-free line, 6232.
Nigeria is currently addressing several other health challenges, including outbreaks of Lassa fever, meningitis, diphtheria, measles, and anthrax. The NCDC continues to monitor the situation closely and remains committed to protecting public health in the country.
