More than £600,000 has been raised to support Sophia Wilson, a ten-year-old from Sauchen, Aberdeenshire, as she seeks treatment for Acute Myeloid Leukaemia. This significant amount provides a “final glimmer of hope” for her family, who faced devastating news following Sophia’s diagnosis in July 2023.

Sophia has shown remarkable strength throughout her battle with cancer. Despite her courage, her family received alarming news earlier this month. Doctors indicated that her leukaemia levels had risen too high, preventing her from undergoing an urgent umbilical stem cell transplant. The only remaining option available in the UK was palliative care, a heart-wrenching prospect for the family.

In a bid to secure alternative treatment, the family turned to a specialized drug available only in the United States. This drug is seen as a last hope for Sophia, prompting a swift response from the community. The funds raised will not only cover the cost of the treatment but also essential travel and accommodation expenses for the family.

Community Support Fuels Fundraising Effort

With the initial fundraising goal surpassed, Sophia has already begun her new treatment. Her family expressed profound gratitude on December 24, 2023, stating, “Due to the help of some amazing people, Doctors in the US, Europe, and here in Aberdeen, together with each and every single person who donated, shared or helped in any way whatsoever, Sophia managed to start her treatment on December 19, 2023. We now have hope and cannot thank everyone enough.”

The overwhelming support from the community highlights not only the financial contributions but also the emotional backing that has rallied around Sophia and her family during this challenging time. The fundraiser continues to accept donations, allowing more individuals to contribute to Sophia’s journey towards recovery.

For those wishing to assist further, the fundraising campaign remains active, reflecting the strength of community spirit in times of need.
