US Health Officials Investigate Infant Botulism Cases Linked to Recalled Formula

Federal and state health officials are currently investigating 13 cases of infant botulism linked to baby formula produced by ByHeart Inc.. The investigation follows a recall initiated by the company for two specific lots of its Whole Nutrition Infant Formula. These incidents have resulted in hospitalization for all affected infants, highlighting a critical public health concern.

The Food and Drug Administration (FDA) announced that the recalled formula comes from lots identified as 206VABP/251261P2 and 206VABP/251131P2. The cases of botulism have been reported across 10 states, including Arizona, California, Illinois, Minnesota, New Jersey, Oregon, Pennsylvania, Rhode Island, Texas, and Washington. Fortunately, no fatalities have been reported as a result of these cases.

The FDA is actively investigating the source of the contamination and whether other products may be affected. The recalled formula, available online and through major retailers, accounts for an estimated 1 percent of national formula sales, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC).

In light of these developments, the CDC has issued guidelines for consumers who may have purchased the recalled formula. Individuals are advised to record the lot number if possible before disposing of or returning the product. Cleaning surfaces and items that came into contact with the formula is also recommended, using a dishwasher or hot, soapy water.

Parents should be particularly vigilant for symptoms in infants who have consumed the recalled formula. Signs of infant botulism can include poor feeding, loss of head control, difficulty swallowing, and decreased facial expression. Symptoms may take weeks to develop, making early detection essential. The CDC emphasizes the importance of seeking medical care immediately if these symptoms occur.

A spokesperson for ByHeart did not respond to a request for comment regarding the recall and associated cases. As the investigation continues, health officials are urging the public to remain informed and cautious.
