Child Excluded from Summer Camp Over Pronoun Dispute

A charity summer camp for children with health challenges and disabilities has come under scrutiny after an eight-year-old boy was excluded due to a disagreement over pronouns. The camp, organized by Over the Wall (OTW), was scheduled to take place from July 6 to 8, 2023, at Strathallan School in Perthshire. The situation escalated following a conversation between the boy’s mother and camp organizers regarding the inclusion of her child’s pronouns on an application form.

The mother reportedly responded with disbelief when asked to provide her son’s pronouns, stating, “Seriously?” Following this, she received a phone call from camp organizers, during which she expressed her belief that individuals cannot change their sex. After this exchange, the boy was informed that he would not be allowed to attend the camp, with organizers citing her “aggressive” tone during the call and concerns about the presence of a transgender child at the event.

In an effort to understand the camp’s decision, the mother submitted a Subject Access Request. Internal documents revealed that the primary reason for her son’s exclusion was linked to her views on gender, which were deemed incompatible with the camp’s commitment to inclusivity. One document noted, “We will be making the family unsuccessful for this year’s camp due to the lack of alignment with our inclusive environment.”

Further details indicated that the mother had stated her belief in only two genders—male and female—and insisted that her child should refer to individuals based on their biological sex. The camp’s representatives emphasized their commitment to diversity and the necessity of creating a safe environment for all attendees, regardless of gender identity. They noted, “Our primary focus is to ensure that every child feels safe and respected at camp.”

The mother, who chose to remain anonymous, expressed her outrage at the treatment she received, calling it “absolutely disgusting.” She received support from the Free Speech Union Scotland, which assisted her in obtaining the internal documents and criticized the camp’s actions as “scandalous.”

Despite the backlash, Over the Wall maintains that the decision to exclude the boy stemmed not from his mother’s beliefs, but from her conduct during the phone call. A spokesperson stated, “The decision was not based on the views expressed on a form, but on conduct during a phone call with our Clinical Director, where she was verbally aggressive and ended the call abruptly.”

This incident highlights ongoing tensions surrounding discussions of gender identity and inclusion in youth programs. As organizations strive to foster inclusive environments, the challenge of balancing diverse views continues to provoke significant debate.
