According to Kazimieras Urbonas, a car expert and Supplier Excellence Manager at Ovoko, one of Europe’s largest online marketplaces for used car parts, the combination of high ambient temperatures and accumulated heat under the car’s bonnet creates conditions that can severely damage the engine. Urbonas explains that during a heatwave, engine bays can reach temperatures 20 to 30 degrees higher than the outside air, creating a perilous environment for vehicle components.

Understanding the Risks of Starting a Hot Engine

The primary concern for drivers arises well before they even attempt to start their vehicles. Throughout a hot day, heat builds up steadily under the bonnet, effectively turning it into an oven. By the time temperatures peak, typically between 11:00 and 15:00, the engine components are already at a critical temperature.

“When you start a superheated engine, you’re asking it to work even harder under intense stress,” Urbonas notes. This strain on the cooling system can lead to significant issues. As the engine tries to cool itself down, the radiator and cooling fans must work overtime to maintain normal operating temperatures, often struggling against the relentless heat.

Urbonas emphasizes that the potential for hidden damage is substantial. The sudden temperature changes from starting an overheated engine can cause metal components to warp, leading to failures that may not be apparent until it is too late. “We see a lot of damaged parts coming through our marketplace during heatwave periods,” he adds, mentioning costly repairs often amounting to hundreds or thousands of pounds.

Signs of Engine Stress and Preventative Measures

Drivers should be vigilant for four key signs indicating that their engine may be suffering from heat stress. An unusually high temperature reading during ignition can signal trouble. Additionally, the smell of sweet coolant, steam escaping from under the bonnet, or unusual noises such as pinging or knocking may indicate that the engine is struggling. If the vehicle feels less responsive or has difficulty accelerating, these could also be signs of overheating.

To mitigate the potential for damage, Urbonas recommends a simple yet effective strategy: “Wait 15 to 20 minutes after peak heat hours before starting your car, or take steps to cool it down first.” He suggests that if driving during peak heat is unavoidable, drivers should allow their vehicles to idle for a minute or two before hitting the road to give the cooling system a chance to stabilize.

Furthermore, Urbonas advises that prevention is always preferable to repair. Simple precautions such as parking in shaded areas, using reflective windscreen covers, and checking coolant levels ahead of heatwaves can save drivers significant money and stress. Regular maintenance, including ensuring the cooling system is in top condition and checking for leaks, is essential during hot weather.
