As autumn approaches, the National Trust is inviting visitors to explore the vibrant landscapes of Wiltshire with a series of exciting events. From art exhibitions to guided walks, these activities will showcase the natural beauty and cultural heritage of locations like Avebury and Lacock, while supporting the conservation of these significant sites for future generations.
Highlights of Avebury’s Autumn Events
At Avebury, a range of activities is scheduled from early September through November, providing opportunities for families and art enthusiasts alike. The Sculpture Exhibition at Avebury Manor Garden runs from September 4 to October 19, featuring a stunning array of sculptures set against the backdrop of the garden’s autumnal colors. This free event allows visitors to appreciate art without the need for prior booking.
Another notable event is the Walking the Landscape: Residency Exhibition, which is open from September 6 to November 2. This exhibition showcases the work of Sarah Hobley, the National Trust’s artist in residence, who has documented her explorations of the Avebury landscape through a series of ceramics. Visitors can engage with Hobley directly during a guided walk on September 11.
The Heritage Open Days on September 12 and 13 offer free entry to Avebury Manor Garden and the Alexander Keiller Museum, allowing guests to delve into the area’s rich history. On September 13, a foraging workshop with herbalist Fred Gillam will teach participants about wild food in the local environment, priced at £55 per person with prior booking required.
For those seeking a deeper understanding of Avebury’s horticultural heritage, a Guided Tour of Avebury Manor Garden will take place on September 18, led by head gardener Garry. This tour costs £10 and requires booking.
The month closes with various family-friendly activities during the October half-term from October 23 to November 2, with entry priced at £2 per person.
Exploring Further Afield: Lacock and Mompesson House
Beyond Avebury, Lacock is hosting an array of photography-related events that celebrate the art form’s history. An exhibition titled Unseen Colour by Werner Bischof runs from September to November, showcasing the work of the World War II photojournalist. Admission is free, though normal charges apply.
On September 20, theatre lovers can enjoy an outdoor performance of Pride and Prejudice, commemorating Jane Austen’s 250th birthday. Tickets for this event vary and must be booked in advance.
Meanwhile, Mompesson House will highlight the Regency era from September 4 to November 2. Visitors can experience the life of the Portman family during this period, with admission free. The house will also participate in Heritage Open Days from September 14 to 16, featuring pop-up performances in celebration of the 30th anniversary of the film Sense and Sensibility.
Lastly, at Stourhead, visitors can partake in guided tours that explore the story behind the estate’s renowned landscape from September 4 to November 2. These tours are free, but normal admission applies, and no prior booking is needed.
