Podgorica is facing significant challenges regarding its wastewater treatment system, with experts emphasizing the need for a modern and comprehensive solution. The proposed treatment system aims to ensure effective waste management, regardless of its location within or outside the city. The issue has been discussed extensively by specialists, including hydrogeology expert D. Mijatovic, who has called for a clear distinction between the wastewater collector and the treatment system.

To establish an effective wastewater treatment system, Mijatovic argues that it must incorporate state-of-the-art technology. He insists that when a perfect treatment system is in place, the concern about its geographical location becomes irrelevant. The focus should be on providing a system that includes hermetically sealed digesters and tanks, safe gas filtration, and the highest quality parameters for treated water. He previously outlined these recommendations in an article published in Pobjeda on September 23, 2025.

Despite not being an expert in wastewater treatment technologies, Mijatovic brings extensive experience in environmental protection. As a hydrogeologist specializing in water quality, he has completed numerous environmental studies and participated in various domestic and international projects. His involvement in significant environmental assessments in the Zetska Plain highlights his capability to address these pressing issues.

Mijatovic advocates for the inclusion of specialists in the planning process, particularly those experienced in wastewater treatment systems. He believes that the expertise of these professionals is necessary to ensure a swift and efficient resolution to the ongoing challenges. Recent discussions among local citizens have led to consultations with specialists from Belgrade and other renowned international centers. These experts have indicated that the treatment system can be redesigned and upgraded during implementation to ensure safety and reliability.

A crucial aspect of the proposed improvements involves separating stormwater from wastewater. This separation is essential and should be integrated into the overall project. Mijatovic expresses confidence that the visiting experts, who have appeared on local television, will address this need effectively.

The ongoing chaos surrounding the wastewater treatment situation has frustrated Mijatovic, who argues that rather than acknowledging the expertise of these specialists, local authorities have often dismissed them. He highlights a recent report indicating that the Mareza Spring’s water quality has deteriorated due to sedimentation in its drainage canal, located five kilometers downstream from the source. This situation underscores the need for informed decision-making based on scientific understanding rather than misconceptions.

Mijatovic emphasizes the importance of allowing qualified experts to redesign the existing solutions, asserting that the project should not be interpreted or defended by individuals lacking the necessary expertise. He warns that failure to address these issues could lead to significant ecological consequences and potential criminal liability for those responsible for the current state of affairs.

The article calls for a shift in approach, urging stakeholders to prioritize the involvement of competent professionals who can guarantee the safety and effectiveness of the wastewater treatment systems. Experts have already proposed a concept that indicates the potential for enhancing the current project.

Mijatovic concludes by stressing that the location of the treatment facility should not overshadow the pressing need for a safe and effective system. It is crucial for the relevant authorities in Montenegro to engage with experienced specialists to develop a solution that meets the highest environmental standards. The current discourse surrounding the wastewater treatment project must move towards a more informed and technically sound foundation to avoid further chaos.
