Nikola Ilić Withdraws from European Boxing Semi-Final Due to Injury

Montenegrin boxer Nikola Ilić has withdrawn from the semi-final of the European Championship in Budva due to a hand injury sustained during the quarter-finals. Ilić had previously achieved a remarkable victory over Italian boxer Rosario Simone, securing a place among the top contenders in the under 54 kilograms category. Ultimately, he concluded the competition with a bronze medal, a significant achievement for both himself and Montenegrin boxing.

Following a thorough medical examination, the medical team advised Ilić against competing in the semi-final, citing the risk to his health. Coach Nikola Ružić expressed deep regret over the situation, stating, “We accepted the doctors’ decision with great sorrow, as Ilić had shown exceptional performances, outstanding form, and great heart, earning his place among Europe’s best in his category.”

Despite missing the opportunity to compete for a spot in the finals, Ilić’s bronze medal symbolizes a substantial success for Montenegrin boxing. The national team, along with coaches, expressed pride in Ilić’s performance at the championship, which featured nearly 400 boxers from 32 countries across Europe.

The championship not only highlighted Ilić’s potential but also reinforced the strength of the Montenegrin boxing community. His coaches remain optimistic about his recovery, confident that he will return to the ring stronger and more prepared for future competitions.

As a result of Ilić’s withdrawal, Georgian boxer Davit Alikhanasshvili advances to the finals without contest. While Ilić must settle for the bronze medal this time, the achievement marks a pivotal point in his career and a promising future for Montenegrin boxing on the European stage.
