Scientists Investigate Menopause’s Career-Impacting Brain Fog

A recent study has highlighted the significant impact of brain fog on women experiencing menopause, with a striking 86% of respondents identifying it as a key symptom. Conducted by the campaign group Menopause Mandate, the survey reveals that brain fog is not only the most common symptom but also the most disruptive, affecting women’s careers and daily lives.
The research, involving over 15,000 women, was launched this week and paints a concerning picture of how menopause affects women in the workplace. According to Mariella Frostrup, chair of Menopause Mandate, the findings indicate a growing need for solutions to combat the effects of this often-overlooked symptom.
Understanding Brain Fog and Its Consequences
Brain fog can manifest in various ways, including difficulties in concentration, forgetfulness, and challenges in completing tasks. Such cognitive impairments can be exhausting and alarming, with many women worrying that it may signify more serious conditions like dementia. The survey revealed that 16% of women have changed or left their jobs due to this symptom, underscoring its significant impact on career trajectories.
The data from the survey is currently under analysis by an expert team at University College London, led by Aimee Spector, Professor of Clinical Psychology of Ageing. Professor Spector noted that there is no formal diagnosis or recommended treatments for brain fog, highlighting a considerable clinical gap. She stated, “This is the focus of much of my research at UCL,” emphasizing the urgent need for recognition and support for women experiencing these symptoms.
Advocacy for Change and Holistic Approaches
The survey results have prompted calls for greater awareness and support for menopause-related issues. Carol Vorderman, a broadcaster and campaigner, led discussions on the impact of menopause in the workplace. The findings indicated that 77% of women felt their work was affected by menopause symptoms, further illustrating the economic ramifications of this health issue.
In response to the challenges posed by menopause, the survey highlighted lifestyle changes among women, with 60% reporting increased exercise as a way to alleviate symptoms. Cherry Healey, a women’s health advocate, noted, “Exercise ranked top” among beneficial lifestyle changes, underscoring the importance of a holistic approach.
Despite some positive shifts, significant gaps remain in menopause education. The survey found that only 14% of women received information about menopause from healthcare professionals, while 40% turned to social media for guidance. This disparity raises concerns about the quality and accuracy of information being disseminated.
Frostrup concluded that addressing menopause is not merely a women’s health issue but an economic one, stating, “Anxiety, brain fog, and low mood are driving talented women out of the workplace, often years before they were ready to leave.” There are ongoing efforts to include menopause education in the NHS’s 40+ health check, aiming to equip women with knowledge and resources earlier in their lives.
With increasing recognition of the challenges posed by menopause, the hope is that this research will accelerate the search for effective solutions and institutional support for the millions of women affected by brain fog and other symptoms. The findings are anticipated to contribute significantly to healthcare policy and enhance the quality of life for women experiencing menopause.
