The Town of Bennington has announced significant construction activities and road closures scheduled for the week of August 18-22, 2023. These projects will involve various streets in the area, prompting detours and lane restrictions as crews work on vital infrastructure improvements.

Details of Road Closures and Traffic Changes

College Road will be closed for several months as a private contractor constructs a new roundabout for the State highway department.

Motorists are advised to follow detour signage to navigate alternate routes.

Gage Street will experience reduced traffic to one lane throughout the week. Town crews are preparing manholes and implementing water shut-offs along the entire length of Gage Street in anticipation of final paving next month. Local residents will be accommodated, but all other traffic should seek alternative routes.

Garbrooke Drive will also have one lane of traffic open on Monday and Tuesday while crews rebuild manholes. Local residents will have access, but others should plan to detour.

Night work is scheduled for the Main Street (East) Bridge #6 at Beech Street on Monday and Wednesday. From 20:00 to 07:00, one-lane traffic or detours may be necessary. During the day, additional lane restrictions will be in place as the State of Vermont begins its bridge replacement project at Beech Street. Drivers should expect delays and seek alternate routes.

Matteson Road will be closed for several months as well, with detours in place for the construction of another roundabout for the State highway department. Again, motorists are urged to follow detour signage.

Murphy Road will be closed to all through traffic on Thursday and Friday for bridge repairs. Residents will need to enter and exit from either side of the bridge during this closure, which will be in effect during the day for the next five weeks.

North Bennington Road, located near Bennington College, will be reduced to one lane for several months due to roundabout construction. Caution is advised as heavy equipment and workers will be present on the road.

Crews will work on lead line replacements along North and South Streets, necessitating one-lane traffic flow. Caution is advised, and drivers are encouraged to find alternate routes when possible. Additionally, Franklin Lane will be closed on Wednesday for sewer line repairs.

Townwide Maintenance and State Projects

Street sweeping will continue each Thursday morning across the town, along with roadside mowing and park maintenance in North Bennington.

The State of Vermont has initiated a full bridge replacement project on Main Street (Route 9) at the Beech Street intersection. This extensive project will require lane closures and detours over the coming months. Night work is scheduled for Monday and Wednesday from 20:00 to 07:00 for utility transfers in preparation for the bridge demolition and replacement.

The roundabout development project at the intersection of Silk Road, North Bennington Road, Bennington College, and Matteson Road will result in single-lane closures with alternating one-way traffic. These closures will be in effect Monday through Friday from 07:00 to 17:00, with flaggers directing traffic. College Drive and Matteson Road will be fully closed at Vermont Route 67A, with traffic maintained via signed detour routes. These closures are expected to last until late September.

Motorists should anticipate uneven gravel surfaces along Vermont Route 67A within the project limits and are advised to slow down and exercise caution while navigating these areas. Further updates about closures and detour routes will be provided in a traffic alert next week prior to implementation.
