Alistair Inkster, a 57-year-old resident of Hamnavoe, has been fined and disqualified from driving after a significant drug driving incident. On December 14, 2022, Inkster was stopped by police while driving between a local shop and his home. Following the stop, he was found to have a blood concentration of benzoylecgonine, the primary metabolite of cocaine, that measured “not less than” 574 microgrammes.

Details of the Incident

The legal limit for benzoylecgonine in one litre of blood is 50 microgrammes. During the proceedings at Lerwick Sheriff Court on Wednesday morning, the court learned that Inkster had consumed cocaine two days prior to the incident. His defence solicitor, Tommy Allan, argued that Inkster believed he would be clear to drive.

Upon hearing the evidence, Sheriff Ian Cruickshank remarked on the severity of Inkster’s reading, stating it was “a very high reading against what is regarded as the legal limit.” This acknowledgment of the elevated blood concentration underscored the court’s decision.

Consequences of the Ruling

As a result of his actions, Inkster received a driving ban for a period of one year. Additionally, he was ordered to pay a fine of £1,000, accompanied by a £40 victim surcharge. The total amount is to be paid within one month.

This case serves as a stark reminder of the legal repercussions that can arise from drug driving. Authorities continue to emphasize the importance of road safety and the risks associated with impaired driving, urging the public to remain vigilant and responsible.
