DWP Phases Out Legacy Benefits, Urges Recipients to Act Now

The Department for Work and Pensions (DWP) is phasing out six legacy benefits as part of a transition to Universal Credit. This managed migration process has been underway for several years, with the official end of Working Tax Credits and Child Tax Credits occurring earlier this year. The remaining four legacy benefits are set to conclude in March 2024, prompting the DWP to send out thousands of Migration Notices to affected recipients by December 2025.
These Migration Notices are crucial for claimants who wish to maintain their benefit payments during this transition. Each letter outlines the steps necessary for transferring to Universal Credit and includes a personal deadline that individuals must adhere to in order to qualify for transitional protection. This protection ensures that recipients do not lose money during the migration, even if their new Universal Credit amount is less than what they received from legacy benefits.
For example, if an individual was receiving £800 a month through Tax Credits but would be eligible for only £600 on Universal Credit, they would receive £200 in transitional protection, allowing them to maintain the £800 monthly benefit. This measure aims to prevent any financial disadvantage for claimants during the migration.
It is essential for individuals to respond promptly to their Migration Notices. If recipients miss the transitional protection deadline or do not act on the notice, their legacy benefits will cease. Nonetheless, individuals can still apply for Universal Credit after the deadline, but they will need to meet all eligibility requirements and follow the standard application process. Without the Migration Notice, applicants will not receive transitional protection and may end up with a lower benefit amount.
For those facing challenges in meeting the deadline specified in their Migration Notice, the DWP encourages them to contact the Universal Credit Migration Notice Helpline. This service may offer additional time to submit claims, but requests typically need to be made before the deadline. The helpline operates Monday to Friday from 08:00 to 18:00 at 0800 169 0328.
Claimants receiving legacy benefits should only take action if they receive a Migration Notice instructing them to transition to Universal Credit or if their personal circumstances change. More detailed guidance on handling Migration Notices can be found on the Gov.uk website. It is important to remember that claiming Universal Credit before receiving a Migration Notice will forfeit eligibility for transitional protection.
As the DWP continues this significant transition, it emphasizes the importance of awareness and action on the part of affected individuals to maintain their benefit support.
