Forbes Dismisses Blackford’s Nomination Rumors for SNP Seat

On August 14, 2023, Kate Forbes, the Deputy First Minister of Scotland, addressed speculation surrounding Ian Blackford potentially seeking the nomination for her constituency seat in the upcoming elections. Forbes confirmed her decision to step down as the Member of the Scottish Parliament for Skye, Lochaber and Badenoch at the next election, and recent media reports suggested that Blackford was considering the same.
Forbes Comments on Speculation
During a live recording of the Herald’s Unspun podcast at the Edinburgh Fringe, Forbes stated that she had conversed with Blackford recently and he did not indicate any intention to pursue the nomination. “I had a chat with him a few days ago and that certainly wasn’t in the conversation,” Forbes said, expressing skepticism about the reports. She emphasized the need for a healthy competition among local party members for her successor.
When asked if she would support Blackford, who previously led the SNP at Westminster before being succeeded by Stephen Flynn, Forbes refrained from making any commitments. “I will wait to see who the candidates are,” she stated, reinforcing her position on the matter.
Forbes Reflects on Her Decision
Forbes also addressed her decision to leave her role in Holyrood, noting that a recent visit to an Indian orphanage significantly influenced her choice. “I was just really overwhelmed that these kids, these really precious kids, didn’t have something that my daughter did have,” she explained. Forbes highlighted the impact her frequent absences from home had on her family life.
She elaborated on the personal toll of her political commitments, stating, “I realised that in voluntarily signing up for another five years, I was choosing to essentially say goodbye to her every Monday morning and say hello again, hopefully, on a Friday night.” Forbes concluded that she does not wish to continue this pattern for another term.
The conversation surrounding her successor and the future leadership of the SNP continues, with figures such as Forbes, Flynn, and Mairi McAllan being widely regarded as potential candidates in any forthcoming leadership contest. Forbes, however, declined to engage in speculation regarding who might emerge as the next leader of the party.
As the political landscape in Scotland evolves, the implications of Forbes’ departure and the ongoing discussions about leadership could shape the future direction of the SNP.
