Greenland’s Prime Minister Affirms Independence at EU Address
Greenland’s Prime Minister Jens-Frederik Nielsen firmly stated that the territory is not seeking to join the European Union or become part of the United States during his inaugural address to the European Parliament on Wednesday. Nielsen emphasized Greenland’s commitment to maintaining its autonomy and enhancing existing partnerships with the EU.
In response to questions from journalists, Nielsen clarified, “We are not going to join another country.” He noted that Greenland does not have any plans to pursue EU membership, but is focused on building upon its current partnership with the bloc which has been in place since Greenland left the European Economic Community in 1985. The Prime Minister highlighted the importance of cooperation in areas such as education, renewable energy, and the mining of critical minerals.
Strengthening EU-Greenland Relations
Greenland, an autonomous territory within the Kingdom of Denmark, has a population of approximately 56,000 residents. Since gaining self-government in 2009, the territory has fostered a cooperative relationship with the EU, which includes the opening of an EU office in Nuuk, Greenland’s capital. Nielsen expressed his desire to enhance this collaboration, particularly in the context of the EU’s need for sustainable raw materials.
“In 2023, the EU and Greenland agreed on a strategic partnership on sustainable raw materials value chains,” Nielsen stated, underscoring the potential impact of Greenland’s resources on global security. He pointed out that the territory is home to 24 of the 34 critical minerals identified by the EU, making it a significant player in the EU’s transition to greener technologies. “Action needs to be taken fast,” he urged, referencing the urgency of addressing global security dynamics.
Fisheries also represent a crucial sector for Greenland, which relies heavily on its fishing industry. The current arrangements, established in 1985, allow EU vessels to fish in Greenlandic waters in exchange for financial contributions and duty-free access to the EU market for fishery products. While Nielsen considers the existing agreements satisfactory, he stressed the importance of adapting these arrangements to reflect the growth of Greenland’s fishing industry.
Controversies and Cultural Integrity
While strengthening ties with the EU, some contentious issues remain. In his address, Nielsen voiced his concerns over the EU’s general ban on seal products, which he believes has adversely impacted the seal hunting industry in Greenland. “This has had grave negative impacts on seal hunting and has led to significant drops in the domestic supply as well as in the export of our sealskin,” he explained, highlighting the cultural significance of seal hunting for the Inuit community.
Nielsen described this practice as “the lifeblood of our culture and our identity,” emphasizing the need for a dialogue that respects Greenlandic traditions and livelihoods. His message was clear: “Greenland needs the European Union, and the European Union needs Greenland.”
European Parliament President Roberta Metsola echoed Nielsen’s sentiments, assuring him that the EU values its partnership with Greenland. “Greenland will always find a strong partner in the European Union,” she stated, emphasizing a relationship built on mutual respect and cooperation. Metsola highlighted the EU’s ongoing investments in Greenland, particularly in education and training, and committed to further support.
As Greenland navigates its relationship with both the EU and the United States, its leaders remain focused on preserving the territory’s autonomy while seeking beneficial partnerships that respect its cultural identity and economic needs.
