Jonathan Critiques Nigerian Politics at Chief Ogiadomhe’s Birthday

Former Nigerian President Dr. Goodluck Jonathan expressed strong criticism of the current political climate in Nigeria, describing it as rife with betrayal and dishonesty. His remarks were made during the 70th birthday celebration of Chief Mike Ogiadomhe in Benin City on March 7, 2024. Jonathan’s comments highlight the challenges facing the nation’s political landscape as he reflected on his own experiences.
The birthday event attracted numerous dignitaries, including former governors such as Lucky Igbinedion, Professor Osarhiemen Osunbor, and Adams Oshiomhole, as well as Ibrahim Dakwambo from Gombe State. The gathering also featured various former deputy governors, including Rev. Peter Obadan and Pius Odubu, alongside the Chief Judge of Edo State, Daniel Okungbowa, and Speaker of the Edo State House of Assembly, Blessing Agbebaku.
During his speech, Jonathan praised Ogiadomhe’s loyalty, stating, “When I became president, one of the few friends who would sacrifice for me is Mike. You know politics, in the Nigerian standard, is about betrayals.” He elaborated on the difficulties of finding trustworthy allies in politics, especially referencing his own experiences during the 2015 election. Jonathan remarked, “You find it difficult to see somebody who will say the same thing in the morning and in the evening. Most politicians will tell you something, and the next hour they are saying another.”
The current Deputy Governor of Edo State, Dennis Idahosa, who represented Governor Monday Okoebholo at the event, commended Ogiadomhe for the enduring foundation he laid during his tenure as deputy governor. “The foundation he laid is what is still being followed,” Idahosa noted.
Former Governor Lucky Igbinedion also spoke highly of Ogiadomhe, expressing confidence in handing over state affairs to him during his own travels. Igbinedion stated, “I had no reservation handing over the affairs of the state to Ogiadomhe.”
In his address, Adams Oshiomhole emphasized his strong bond with Ogiadomhe, stating, “Whenever I discussed politics with the celebrant, I always told him that wherever Jonathan is, that is where I would be.” He also acknowledged Ogiadomhe’s wife, Lousia, for her unwavering support.
Jonathan’s remarks resonate with many Nigerians who feel disillusioned by the political environment. His reflections on trust and loyalty in politics underscore a broader sentiment that has been growing among the populace. The event served not only as a celebration of Ogiadomhe’s life but also as a platform to voice concerns about the integrity of leadership in Nigeria today.
