King Charles Closes Balmoral Castle Amid Severe Weather Conditions
Balmoral Castle, the cherished royal residence of King Charles, has adjusted its public opening hours due to severe winter weather. The castle, famously associated with the late Queen Elizabeth, was closed on Thursday, November 20, 2023, and will experience a delayed opening the following day as heavy snowfall continues to impact the region.
A statement on the castle’s official Instagram account confirmed the closure, stating, “Due to the continuing wintry weather conditions, Balmoral will be closed to the public for the remainder of the day. Tomorrow’s opening (Friday, November 21) will be delayed until 11:00 AM.” Visitors who purchased tickets for the Evening at Balmoral event were reassured that the experience is expected to proceed as scheduled.
The castle’s website further elaborated on the situation, indicating that the grounds, gift shop, and restaurant would remain closed on Thursday due to the adverse weather. Regular operating hours for Balmoral Castle typically range from 10:00 AM to 2:00 PM on most days, with closures on Mondays and Tuesdays.
Impact of Severe Weather on the UK
The closure comes as the UK grapples with a significant cold snap, which has seen temperatures plummet. The Met Office reported that temperatures dropped to as low as minus 11 degrees Celsius overnight at Loch Glascarnoch in the Scottish Highlands. Much of the country recorded temperatures below minus 7 degrees Celsius, while England and Wales experienced slightly milder conditions, with lows of minus 6 degrees Celsius in Trawsgoed, Wales, and minus 4 degrees Celsius in Rostherne, Cheshire.
Balmoral Castle holds special significance for the royal family. Following the Christmas festivities at Sandringham, King Charles typically retreats to Balmoral, often spending time at his private residence, Birkhall, with Queen Camilla. This preference contrasts with that of his mother, who resided at Balmoral Castle during her stays.
As the weather continues to challenge daily life in the UK, the safety of visitors remains a priority for royal residences. The adjustments at Balmoral underscore the impact of extreme weather on public access to significant cultural and historical sites.
