Labour’s Streeting Advocates for Rayner’s Return to Cabinet
The Labour Party’s Health Secretary, Wes Streeting, called for the return of former Deputy Prime Minister Angela Rayner to the Cabinet during his speech at the party’s conference in Liverpool. Rayner stepped down earlier this month following a controversy regarding her tax affairs. Streeting praised her contributions to social care reforms since Labour assumed office in 2022, emphasizing the crucial role she played in advocating for care workers.
During his address, Streeting highlighted significant achievements in social care under Labour’s leadership. He noted the implementation of the largest increase in carers’ allowance since the 1970s, amounting to an additional £2,000 for family carers. He remarked, “Their work is not just loving; it’s lifesaving.”
Streeting also outlined the installation of new home adaptations for over 15,000 disabled individuals, enhancing their safety, dignity, and quality of life. He announced a new fair pay agreement for care workers, backed by a substantial £500 million investment aimed at improving pay and working conditions.
He expressed gratitude to the trade unions, specifically Unison and GMB, for their unwavering support of care workers during challenging times. “They stood up for care workers when no one else would,” he asserted.
Streeting further underscored Rayner’s unique understanding of the struggles faced by care workers, given her background in the field. “She brought that experience to the Cabinet table as the care worker who became our country’s Deputy Prime Minister,” he stated, acknowledging her significant contributions to the party’s agenda.
The call for Rayner’s reinstatement received a warm response from the delegates, who applauded Streeting’s sentiments. “We need her back,” he concluded, promising to ensure she is aware of the support she enjoys within the party.
Rayner’s departure from the Cabinet followed an investigation by ministerial standards adviser Sir Laurie Magnus into allegations surrounding her property ownership. Magnus determined that while Rayner acted in good faith, the onus of reporting tax liabilities rests with the individual. He noted that her failure to fully settle her stamp duty liability, which came to light through media scrutiny, constituted a breach of the ministerial code.
As Labour navigates the aftermath of Rayner’s resignation, Streeting’s appeal signals a desire for unity and continued advocacy for social care reform within the party.
