Portsmouth Police Launch Live Facial Recognition Vans to Combat Crime

High-risk criminals in Portsmouth have received a warning from local authorities as the Hampshire and Isle of Wight Constabulary prepares to deploy live facial recognition vans. This initiative is part of a national rollout aimed at identifying outstanding suspects and reducing crime rates in the area.
The new technology follows a successful pilot program conducted in September 2024, where similar systems were tested in Portsmouth and other regions within Hampshire. The pilot demonstrated the effectiveness of live facial recognition in identifying individuals wanted for high-risk and priority offenses, as well as assisting in searches for missing persons.
Enhanced Crime-Fighting Strategy
Detective Chief Superintendent Tim Rowlandson, who is leading this project for the Hampshire and Isle of Wight Constabulary, expressed enthusiasm about the potential of this technology. He stated, “We are really excited to have this technology here in Hampshire and the Isle of Wight to help us target outstanding suspects and reduce crime.”
The deployment of facial recognition vans is expected to significantly enhance officers’ ability to quickly identify suspects. According to Rowlandson, during the pilot program, detectives specifically targeted outstanding suspects, resulting in seven arrests over a three-day period. This success aligns with findings from other forces that have utilized facial recognition technology, which shows marked reductions in crime in areas where these vans operate.
The upcoming deployment will not only focus on crime prevention but will also aid in locating high-risk individuals reported missing. The police force aims to finalize plans for the initial rollouts later this year, with hopes of sharing specific details in the coming months.
Community Safety Focus
Rowlandson emphasized the importance of equipping officers with the latest technological advancements to ensure public safety. He noted, “This is part of our commitment to ensure that our officers are equipped with the latest technological advances that policing has to offer.” The use of live facial recognition is viewed as a valuable tool to protect vulnerable individuals and bring offenders to justice, benefiting everyone in the community.
As the technology prepares for deployment, Portsmouth residents are advised to remain vigilant, as the presence of these vans signifies a proactive approach by law enforcement to address crime effectively. The Hampshire and Isle of Wight Constabulary’s initiative reflects a broader trend across various police forces in the UK, all seeking innovative solutions to enhance community safety and security.
