Somerset Bus Workers Prepare for Strike Vote Over Pay Dispute
Bus workers in Somerset are set to vote on potential strike action as tensions rise over pay disputes within the public transport sector. Members of the Rail, Maritime and Transport (RMT) union at First South West will participate in a ballot in the coming weeks, with the outcome determining whether they will embark on a campaign of industrial action. This move comes in response to ongoing negotiations regarding wages, as the RMT pushes for an increase towards their goal of £15 per hour.
The RMT’s general secretary, Eddie Dempsey, emphasized the urgency of the situation, stating, “Bus workers at First South West are being left behind while other operators across the region pay more.” This sentiment reflects a growing concern among workers who feel their compensation does not align with industry standards in the area.
The potential strike in Somerset is part of a wider trend, as members of the Unite union in various locations are also involved in disputes over pay and working conditions. Strikes are already planned at the Brighton Bus Company and Metrobus Crawley, with workers set to walk out on October 6 and October 15 after rejecting a 3.5 percent pay offer, which they deemed insufficient.
Recent industrial action in Somerset saw more than 300 RMT members participate in a 48-hour strike, which included the establishment of picket lines in Taunton. As the ballot draws closer, the possibility of further disruptions looms, highlighting the critical nature of the ongoing negotiations in the transport sector.
The outcome of the upcoming vote will significantly impact the bus services in Somerset and could set a precedent for similar disputes across the South West region. Stakeholders are closely monitoring developments, as the situation continues to evolve. With public transport playing an essential role in daily commutes and accessibility, the implications of these negotiations extend beyond the workforce, affecting passengers and the broader community.
