Thurso Art Gallery to Host ‘A Light in the Dark’ Exhibition

A new art exhibition in Thurso, Scotland, aims to raise awareness about domestic abuse and the vital support provided by the local charity, Caithness and Sutherland Women’s Aid (CASWA). Titled A Light in the Dark, the exhibition will open on October 1, 2023, at the Thurso Art Gallery, located behind the town’s library, and will run throughout the month.
CASWA has organized this event to showcase artwork created by women, children, and young people who have received support from the charity. The pieces reflect the unique experiences and perspectives of the individuals involved, and CASWA emphasizes that the exhibition will serve as a platform for their voices to be “heard and respected.”
Exhibition Details and Community Engagement
The exhibition, which is designed to guide viewers through what is termed the “chronology of abuse,” will officially open from 14:00 to 16:00 on the opening day. Everyone in the community is invited to attend. CASWA Manager Gillian Hossack expressed her gratitude to the artists and highlighted the contributions of women’s worker Juliette Currums in bringing the exhibition to fruition.
Gillian noted, “The CASWA team is delighted to have brought this exhibition to life alongside the incredible individuals we support. Special thanks go to Juliette for her leadership and dedication throughout the project.” She encouraged community members to visit the exhibition and engage with the artwork during October.
The Thurso Art Gallery will be open for viewing the exhibition during the following hours: Monday, Wednesday, and Friday from 10:00 to 18:00, Tuesday and Thursday from 10:00 to 20:00, and Saturday from 10:00 to 13:00. The gallery will be closed on Sundays.
Future Initiatives and Ongoing Support
In November, CASWA plans to launch its fifth annual initiative involving the distribution of 16 books across Caithness and Sutherland through “book drops.” This project coincides with the international period of activism against gender-based violence, known as the 16 Days of Activism, which takes place from November 25 to December 10 each year.
Juliette emphasized the importance of this period, stating, “It is important for us not just to support those affected by abuse but also to fight against the causes of gender-based violence.” She encouraged the community to suggest feminist-themed books or those featuring strong female characters that challenge traditional stereotypes.
CASWA can be reached by phone at 0345 408 0151 or via email at [email protected] for more information. For immediate support, the Scottish Domestic Abuse and Forced Marriage Helpline is available 24/7 at 0800 027 1234.
The A Light in the Dark exhibition not only aims to foster creative healing but also seeks to initiate crucial conversations about the impact of domestic abuse within the community.
