In a statement released on September 6, 2023, Tinubu praised Chikelu, who served as a ‘super’ Permanent Secretary in various ministries during the 1970s. The President emphasized that Chikelu’s life has been a testament to selfless service, promoting peace, stability, and national development. He expressed hope that Chikelu’s legacy would inspire future generations of leaders.

The President remarked, “Your life and work in the public and private sectors have consistently reflected excellence, integrity, and service to humanity.”
As part of the birthday celebrations, Chikelu’s biography, titled “Owelle, The GPO Chikelu Story,” was publicly presented in London. Written by historian and archivist Nze Ed Keazor, the biography offers insights into Chikelu’s life and career, serving as an educational resource for current and future political office holders.
In his message, Tinubu noted the importance of Chikelu’s story, stating, “I firmly believe that this work… is a gift to the public and to political office holders, offering invaluable lessons on integrity, accountability, and patriotism.” He highlighted the relevance of Chikelu’s experiences to the challenges faced by the nation today.
Celebrating a National Icon
The President concluded his tribute with a heartfelt birthday wish, celebrating Chikelu as a national icon. He referred to him with honorifics such as Commander of the Order of the Niger (CON), Owelle of Ichida, Owelle of Anaocha, and Knight of St. Paul, Church of Nigeria (Anglican Communion).
Tinubu’s acknowledgment of Chikelu’s contributions not only honors the individual but also emphasizes the values of responsibility and accountability in public service.
