Tom Homan Confronts Critics at UTEP Immigration Event

A discussion on immigration enforcement led by former acting ICE Director Tom Homan became contentious during a Turning Point USA (TPUSA) event at the University of Texas at El Paso on December 4, 2023. The event, intended to facilitate a dialogue on border security, devolved into heated exchanges after an attendee accused Homan of being a “racist” and “traitor.”

In a direct response to the accusations, Homan remained defiant, telling the critic to “grow a backbone.” He emphasized his views on border security while protests occurred outside the venue. The confrontation intensified during the Q&A session when the same individual claimed that Patrick Crusius, the perpetrator of the 2019 mass shooting at a Walmart in El Paso, was inspired by rhetoric similar to Homan’s. The man referenced the Great Replacement Theory, a controversial ideology suggesting that non-White immigrants are displacing the White population.

Homan dismissed the assertion that his views contributed to violence, stating, “The open border is a mess, and it was by design.” He argued that the current administration had intentionally left the border unsecured to increase potential Democratic voter numbers. “I don’t give a s**t what people think of me,” he reiterated, showing his resolve amidst the backlash.

Outside the university, dozens of protesters voiced their opposition to Homan’s stance on immigration. Among them was Emil Esparza, who told local media that Homan’s visit was “insulting.” She articulated concerns about the appropriateness of holding such discussions in a city heavily populated by Latinos and directly located at the border.

Homan’s position on immigration and his criticism of the Biden administration have been longstanding. In January 2023, he condemned President Biden, labeling him “the first president in my lifetime to ever come into office and intentionally unsecure the border.”

Following the event, TPUSA acknowledged Homan’s decision to choose El Paso for the discussion. The organization expressed disappointment over the local community’s reaction, stating that “students who have maintained a non-inflammatory approach” were disheartened by the city’s responses, which they viewed as based on “stereotypes and assumptions.”

This intense exchange between Homan and his critics, alongside the protests, underscores the polarized political climate surrounding immigration issues in the United States. The incident at UTEP reflects broader societal tensions and highlights the challenges of navigating contentious discussions in an increasingly divided environment.
