The UK government has unveiled a new competition aimed at celebrating the contributions of towns outside major urban centers, as announced by Culture Secretary Lisa Nandy. Dubbed the UK Town of Culture, this initiative will run alongside the established UK City of Culture program, which began in 2013. Towns across the country will now have the opportunity to compete for the title in 2029.

During her address at the Labour Party conference, Ms. Nandy emphasized the importance of recognizing the creativity, history, and identity that characterize various communities. “Today we’re launching a brand new competition to recognise the UK Town of Culture to celebrate the creativity, history and identity that has made us such a vibrant, diverse and incredible country,” she stated. The initiative aims to highlight the talent and imagination present in every corner of the nation, while also addressing the disparities in opportunity.

To further support this vision, the government is introducing a £150 million Creative Places Growth Fund. This fund is designed to empower six regions outside of London, enabling local mayors to assist creative businesses within their communities. The initiative will provide access to financing, mentoring, and networking opportunities to connect local enterprises with investors and skill development programs.

Ms. Nandy also announced an additional investment of £132 million dedicated to youth centers, grassroots sports, and arts and music programs. This funding aims to support communities that are in critical need of resources, ensuring that cultural and recreational opportunities are available to all.

The launch of the UK Town of Culture competition is seen as a significant step towards recognizing and uplifting smaller communities that often contribute greatly to the cultural fabric of the nation. With this initiative, the government aims to foster local pride and encourage creative expression across the country.
