Violence erupted in central London during the “Unite the Kingdom” rally organized by Tommy Robinson on March 16, 2024. The event, which attracted participants from across the globe, devolved into confrontations between police, rally attendees, and counter-protesters, leading to multiple injuries and arrests.

Protesters arrived in large numbers, some reportedly flying in from as far away as New Zealand. A participant, speaking to a reporter from the Press Association, mentioned he had traveled with “about 100 of my warriors” to show support for the rally. The event featured several right-wing figures, including Elon Musk, who addressed the crowd via video link. Musk stated, “There’s this genuine risk of rape and murder and the destruction of the country and the dissolution of the entire way of life.” He further characterized the political left as “the party of murder and celebrating murder,” stirring further outrage among attendees.

As tensions escalated, police in riot gear were deployed to manage the situation. By 17:00 local time, the Metropolitan Police reported that nine arrests had been made. Officers faced significant aggression as protesters attempted to breach cordoned-off areas. According to a police statement, “When officers moved in to stop them they faced unacceptable violence,” noting that bottles, flares, and other projectiles were thrown at them.

Counter-protesters from the group Stand Up to Racism were also present, and police worked to keep them safe amid the chaos. Footage circulating on social media depicted scenes of mayhem, with police struggling to control a surging crowd of flag-waving protesters. At one point, an unidentified man was seen lying on the ground with a head injury, as police rushed to provide assistance.

As the day unfolded, some protesters climbed Nelson’s Column and engaged in disruptive behavior, prompting police to intervene. Videos showed police officers using batons to push back protesters, while chants and aggressive slogans filled the air. One protester was heard shouting, “F*** off to Gaza,” reflecting the rally’s contentious atmosphere.

The Stand Up to Racism organization condemned the rally, labeling it a “far-right” event aimed at inciting violence. They stated, “The far right came to London today to start a riot,” emphasizing their concerns about the rhetoric and actions of the participants. In a troubling incident, an individual in a Fred Perry shirt was recorded calling for violence against Keir Starmer, the leader of the Labour Party, saying, “Keir Starmer needs to be assassinated.”

As the protest continued, disturbing images emerged on social media, including one showing men, one draped in a St George’s flag, urinating in public. The protests also drew attention from artists, with El Haq Latief, a non-binary Southeast Asian actor, expressing their dismay on TikTok while preparing for a performance of *Cabaret*, a musical that critiques the rise of far-right ideologies in Germany before World War II. Latief remarked, “This is actually disgusting behaviour,” as they shared footage of young children involved in the protests.

As of now, Keir Starmer has not issued an official statement regarding the violent events. Meanwhile, the Prime Minister was attending an Arsenal match at the Emirates Stadium, seemingly distant from the unfolding turmoil in the capital. The situation at the rally underscores ongoing divisions within British society, as well as the challenges authorities face in managing public demonstrations.

The implications of the day’s events may resonate beyond London, further shaping the discourse around political extremism and public safety in the UK.
