Apple Faces Backlash Over iPhone 17 Pro Color Choices
Following the launch of the iPhone 17 series on September 9, 2023, Apple is facing significant criticism from users unhappy with the color options for the new iPhone 17 Pro and Pro Max models. Many are expressing their disappointment on social media, with some even threatening to switch to competitor Samsung over this issue.
During a high-profile launch event, Apple revealed its latest lineup, which includes the standard iPhone 17, iPhone 17 Pro, and the new iPhone Air, celebrated for being the slimmest model the company has produced. While the iPhone 17 and iPhone Air will be available in lighter metal tones and pastel shades, the Pro models are limited to navy, silver, and orange, a decision some critics are calling a misstep.
Consumer Reactions Fuel Boycott Calls
TikTok user Katlynn Nelson sparked a wave of backlash with a video outlining her concerns about the Pro model colors. In her post, she stated, “Apple, you messed up when you launched navy, orange, and silver as the iPhone 17 Pro and iPhone 17 Pro Max colours.”
Nelson argues that a significant portion of the target demographic for the Pro models consists of women, who might be more inclined to choose devices in “cuter” colors, such as pink or pastel shades. She noted that many women have already switched to Samsung’s flip phones, which are available in attractive colors. “Do you want to know what you are doing? Pushing them over to Samsung,” she claimed.
The video resonated with thousands of viewers, leading to an influx of comments supporting her position. Many echoed her sentiments, questioning the lack of traditional colors in the new offerings. Comments included, “What happened to white, black, silver, gold?” and “People saying they just cover it with a case have never had the satisfaction of a pink, mint, or lavender phone with a clear glitter case.”
Mixed Responses from Users
While many users support Nelson’s perspective, others defended Apple’s choices. Some expressed excitement about the orange color, stating that it does not matter what color the phone is, as they plan to use cases. One commenter noted, “As a female, I was lowkey excited to see the orange colour,” while another added, “I mean, I don’t love the orange, but the other colours are great as a woman in tech.”
The contrasting opinions highlight an ongoing debate about product design and marketing strategies in the tech industry. As companies like Apple strive to cater to diverse consumer preferences, their decisions may significantly impact brand loyalty and market share.
Apple has not yet responded to requests for comment regarding the backlash and consumer sentiments surrounding the new iPhone 17 series. The company’s ability to address these concerns may determine whether users stick with the brand or turn to alternatives like Samsung.
