Dorset Photographer Captures Stunning Perseid Meteor Shower Display

A remarkable display of the Perseid meteor shower was captured by photographer Josh Dury in Dorset, England. Dury dedicated several nights to photograph this celestial event, specifically positioning himself at the iconic Durdle Door limestone arch. His efforts yielded a stunning collection of images that showcase the beauty of this annual phenomenon.
The Perseid meteor shower is renowned for its vibrant streaks of light, which originate from the constellation Perseus. This year, Dury faced challenges due to the bright light of the waning gibbous moon, which obscured much of the meteor activity. He explained, “Unfortunately, the bright waning gibbous moon will blot out this year’s display, so I had a go at imaging them at the beginning of the month.”
Dury documented a total of 14 meteors over a six-hour period from July 28 to August 1, 2023. He utilized long exposure techniques and a star tracker to effectively capture the meteors in their radiant flight. “It was a longer integration this time to capture some meteors, but obviously not as active during the peak,” he noted.
By employing innovative camera methods, Dury was able to enhance the images through a process of stacking. This technique involves combining multiple exposures to increase the signal-to-noise ratio, ultimately resulting in clearer and more detailed views of the meteors. He stated, “Data was captured using long exposure tracking the sky using a star tracker to record meteors. Images were stacked in sequence using photo-editing software.”
The Perseid meteor shower occurs annually, typically peaking in mid-August. This year’s display, while affected by lunar brightness, still provided an opportunity for stargazers and photographers like Dury to engage with the night sky. His dedication to capturing this celestial event reflects a growing enthusiasm among amateur astronomers and photographers.
Dury’s images serve not only as a testament to his skills but also highlight the natural beauty of the cosmos. As interest in astronomy continues to rise, events like the Perseids encourage people to look up and appreciate the wonders of the universe.
