Guildford MP Celebrates 40 Years of Innovation at SSTL

Guildford MP Zoë Franklin visited Surrey Satellite Technology Ltd (SSTL) on March 15, 2024, to commemorate the company’s 40th anniversary. During her visit, Franklin engaged with employees, explored ongoing satellite projects, and acknowledged SSTL’s significant contributions to the local economy as well as the broader UK space industry.
Founded in 1985 by Professor Sir Martin Sweeting, SSTL has evolved from a spinout of the University of Surrey into a global leader in small satellite development. Its reputation for innovation and affordability is underscored by its successful launch of over 70 satellite missions. The company’s pioneering approach has played a crucial role in making space more accessible through cost-effective satellite design. SSTL remains a vital employer in Guildford, attracting skilled engineers, researchers, and technicians to the region.
The visit included Franklin’s participation in SSTL’s weekly “Family Meeting,” where she addressed the staff and shared insights about her political journey and the importance of supporting high-tech industries. She emphasized how companies like SSTL drive innovation and create high-skilled jobs, maintaining the UK’s competitive edge in science and technology.
Following the meeting, Franklin toured SSTL’s advanced “cleanroom” facilities. Under the guidance of managing director Andrew Cawthorne and founder Professor Sir Martin Sweeting, she observed several satellite missions currently under development. The projects range from Earth observation satellites to communications platforms and space science missions.
SSTL’s anniversary offers an opportunity to highlight its strong links with the local community. The company actively collaborates with the University of Surrey and local schools to inspire young people to pursue careers in STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics). SSTL regularly hosts outreach events, provides work experience placements, and supports student-led space initiatives.
As it celebrates four decades of innovation, SSTL remains focused on the future, with upcoming satellite launches scheduled later this year and an evolving role in international space collaboration. The company’s anniversary comes at a time of renewed national focus on the UK space sector, underscoring its commitment to driving progress and maintaining its leadership in the industry.
