Illinois Emerges as a Quantum Innovation Hub in the Midwest
Illinois is positioning itself as a leading center for quantum science and technology, driven by significant initiatives in the region. In a recent episode of the Physics World Weekly podcast, physicists Preeti Chalsani, chief quantum officer at Intersect Illinois, and David Awschalom, director of Q-NEXT, discussed the developments that are paving the way for the state to become a powerhouse in this emerging field.
Strategic Developments in Quantum Technology
Home to Chicago, the third largest urban area in the United States, Illinois is not only known for its vibrant city life but also for its robust scientific community. The state hosts two national laboratories—Fermilab and Argonne National Laboratory—and several prestigious universities, making it an ideal location for quantum innovation.
Chalsani highlighted the ambitious plans for the Illinois Quantum and Microelectronics Park, a 128-acre technology campus being developed on the site of a former steel mill just south of Chicago. This park has already attracted its first major tenant, PsiQuantum, which aims to construct a utility-scale, fault-tolerant quantum computer at the site, marking a significant milestone for the region’s quantum landscape.
Collaborative Efforts to Advance Quantum Research
Under the leadership of Argonne National Laboratory, Q-NEXT is spearheading initiatives that bring together academia, national laboratories, industry, and government. Awschalom elaborated on how these collaborations are essential for establishing Illinois—and its neighboring states, Wisconsin and Indiana—as a major hub for quantum research and development.
In addition to Chalsani and Awschalom, the podcast features insights from notable figures in the quantum field, including Celia Merzbacher of the US’s Quantum Economic Development Consortium, Nadya Mason of the Pritzker School of Molecular Engineering at the University of Chicago, and Travis Humble of the Quantum Science Center at Oak Ridge National Laboratory. These discussions highlight the collective effort to propel the quantum sector forward.
The podcast is supported by American Elements, a leading manufacturer of engineered and advanced materials. The company’s role in scaling laboratory breakthroughs to industrial production has significantly influenced technological advancements since 1990, impacting sectors such as LED lighting, smartphones, and electric vehicles.
As Illinois continues to foster collaboration and innovation in quantum technology, it is setting the stage for a dynamic future in this critical area of science. The developments in the state reflect not only a commitment to advancing quantum research but also the potential for significant economic growth and technological leadership in the coming years.
