Moray Council libraries have launched two significant digital research tools, enhancing access to historical records for library members. Users can now explore the British Newspaper Archive and Ancestry Library Edition, providing opportunities to delve into history and personal genealogy.

The British Newspaper Archive offers free access to millions of newspaper articles from around the world. With a library membership card, users can conduct searches and explore historical newspapers directly from local libraries. This initiative aims to promote historical literacy and community engagement through accessible resources.

Additionally, the Ancestry Library Edition allows users to trace family histories by providing access to a range of UK records. These include vital records for births, deaths, and marriages, as well as military service records, census data, and parish records. This tool is now available in all Moray libraries, enabling users to uncover their ancestry and understand their familial roots more deeply.

Accessing the New Resources

Library PCs are available for free use, though it is recommended to book in advance to ensure availability. Alternatively, users can connect to public Wi-Fi and access these resources on personal devices, making it convenient for patrons to engage with the materials from anywhere.

Cllr Kathleen Robertson, Chair of Moray Council’s Education, Children’s and Leisure Services committee, expressed enthusiasm about the new offerings. She stated, “We’re delighted to offer these new digital resources to our community. Whether you’re researching your family tree or exploring historical events, these tools provide a wealth of information right at your fingertips.”

With these additions, Moray Council libraries not only expand their digital footprint but also enhance their role as vital community resources. The initiative reflects a commitment to providing comprehensive support for both historical exploration and personal research, fostering a culture of learning and discovery among residents.
