Proposal for Diana Fountain in Lerwick to Achieve Listed Status

A proposal to designate the Diana Fountain at Victoria Pier in Lerwick as a listed structure has been put forward by Historic Environment Scotland (HES). The fountain, which serves as a memorial to the crew of the Hull whaling boat Diana, was built in 1890 and commemorates the hardships faced by its crew during a perilous voyage in 1866.

The Diana became trapped in ice in Baffin Bay for over six months, resulting in several crew members perishing and others returning in poor health. Following the ship’s eventual return to Ronas Voe in 1867, the fountain was erected to honor those who suffered during this significant event in maritime history. The original drinking fountain has since been replaced by a chalice.

HES recently confirmed it is consulting the public on this potential C-list designation. An application was submitted to HES in 2023 requesting an assessment of the site for this purpose. The application emphasized the fountain’s importance as a historical reference to the 19th Century whaling industry, which played a vital role in the economies of both Scotland and England, particularly in the Shetland Islands and Kingston upon Hull.

Criteria for Designation

The heritage organization noted that the fountain meets the criteria of having “special architectural or historic interest” for various reasons. These include its social, historical, and commemorative significance related to the whaling industry. The construction quality and its historical context also contribute to its potential listing.

In a recent report, HES stated that while the Diana memorial fountain is not a rare example of its building type from the late 19th century, it remains one of a small number of designated sites and structures representing whaling in Scotland. The consultation period is open until August 27, inviting public feedback on the proposal.

Historic Preservation Efforts

Designations by HES, such as listed building status and scheduled monuments, are intended to protect and preserve features of historic or architectural significance. The organization plays a crucial role in safeguarding Scotland’s cultural heritage.

Additionally, there has been a previous application submitted for the Clickimin Leisure Complex in Lerwick by an architectural heritage charity. However, HES determined that the complex should not receive listed status.

The outcome of the consultation regarding the Diana Fountain will be closely monitored, as it represents a significant piece of local history and a tribute to those who faced adversity at sea.
