Scientists Uncover Eye Signal to Instantly Communicate Needs

Recent research from Flinders University in Adelaide, South Australia, has identified a non-verbal eye signal that effectively communicates a person’s needs without the necessity of words. This discovery could transform how individuals interact in various social situations, particularly when verbal communication is challenging.

The study, led by Dr. Nathan Caruana, examined how eye contact influences our understanding of others’ intentions. Researchers found that looking at an object, establishing eye contact with another person, and then returning focus to the object significantly increases the likelihood of the observer interpreting the gaze as a request. This method is particularly useful in crowded environments or social gatherings where direct communication may be impractical.

Dr. Caruana and his team conducted experiments involving 137 participants engaged in a block-building task with a virtual partner. During this activity, participants were tasked with determining whether their partner was inspecting or requesting one of three objects. According to the findings published in the journal Royal Society Open Science, the sequence of eye movements—especially the eye contact between two individuals before looking back at the object—enhanced the speed and accuracy of request perception.

The research highlights the importance of context in eye movements. Dr. Caruana noted, “It’s not just how often someone looks at you, but the context of their eye movements that makes that behavior appear communicative and relevant.” This insight could have far-reaching implications for enhancing non-verbal communication in sectors such as competitive sports, military operations, and environments with high noise levels.

Another interesting aspect of the study is that participants responded similarly to gaze behavior exhibited by a robot. Dr. Caruana stated, “Our findings have helped to decode one of our most instinctive behaviors and how it can be used to build better connections, whether you’re talking to a teammate, a robot, or someone who communicates differently.” This suggests that understanding eye contact can enhance communication training in high-pressure situations.

The implications extend beyond interpersonal communication. For instance, Dr. Neeltje Boogert, a research fellow in behavioral ecology at the University of Exeter, has identified that maintaining eye contact can deter seagulls from approaching food. She explained, “Gulls find the human gaze aversive and are less likely to approach your food when you’re staring them down,” underscoring the practical applications of eye signaling in everyday life.

In addition to the specific gaze sequence, understanding various eye signals can enhance interpersonal interactions. For example, normal eye contact (50-70 percent of the time during conversation) indicates attentiveness, while prolonged eye contact can signal interest or aggression, depending on context. Conversely, limited eye contact may suggest discomfort or disinterest.

The direction of gaze also provides insight into a person’s thoughts, with looking to the left often associated with memory recall and looking to the right linked to creative thinking.
