Test Your Skills with Challenging Gerrymandering Puzzles

Earlier today, logic enthusiasts were invited to tackle three challenging gerrymandering puzzles designed by Brady Forrest, also known as Deckard. The goal of these puzzles is to determine the unique electoral map where the minority colour prevails in the most regions. Each grid presents a distinct challenge, with regions defined as contiguous blocks of cells connected either horizontally or vertically.
The puzzles are structured to engage players in critical thinking about electoral boundaries and representation. In each scenario, a region is won by the colour that occupies the majority of cells. The puzzles are accessible for both pencil-and-paper solvers and those who prefer interactive digital formats.
Exploring the Puzzles
The first puzzle is classified as easy, requiring participants to divide a grid into five regions of five cells each. The minority colour, purple, must secure the majority of these regions. The second puzzle increases in difficulty, asking players to split a grid into five regions of ten cells each, with the same requirement for purple to win. Importantly, ties are not permitted in any region.
The final and most challenging puzzle involves dividing a grid into seven regions of seven cells each, where blue, again the minority colour, must win the majority of regions. As with the previous puzzles, no ties are allowed for first place in any region.
For those interested in attempting these puzzles, printouts are available, along with additional bonus puzzles. Interactive versions can be played online, providing an engaging way to explore gerrymandering concepts.
Additional Insights and Resources
Deckard has shared insights into the mathematics behind these puzzles, which can be viewed in a YouTube video where he explains the solution methods. This educational approach enhances understanding of gerrymandering and its implications in electoral politics.
Moreover, in related news, Gerry Taggart, a former Premier League player, is noted for being one of only four players to receive a red card on their birthday. This interesting fact is highlighted in the new book, Football School Facts, co-authored by Ben Lyttleton. The book aims to entertain and educate readers of all ages, featuring a wealth of intriguing football trivia and is currently available at the Guardian Bookshop.
The puzzles and additional trivia offer both a fun challenge and a deeper understanding of the complexities surrounding electoral processes, making them an appealing choice for puzzle enthusiasts and those curious about gerrymandering alike.
