Celtic’s Wilfried Nancy Defends Tactics Amid Criticism

Wilfried Nancy, the new manager of Celtic Football Club, has responded to criticism following his debut defeat, stating he will not “waste time” on negative reactions. Nancy’s tenure began with a 2-1 home loss to Hearts on March 3, 2024, leaving the team three points behind the William Hill Premiership leaders despite having a game in hand. The match featured Nancy using a hand-held tactics board to communicate changes, which drew mixed reactions, including scrutiny over his choice of footwear.

Speaking at Celtic Park ahead of the upcoming Europa League fixture against AS Roma on March 7, Nancy emphasized the importance of focusing on his responsibilities as a coach. He remarked, “People deserve the right to talk. If I use [the tactics board], it’s because it’s good for me. Simple as that.” The 48-year-old manager, who previously led teams such as Columbus Crew and Montreal Impact, acknowledged that varying opinions are part of his role.

Nancy’s approach to coaching stems from his extensive experience as an assistant, where he learned from various coaching styles. He expressed, “When I decided to become a coach… I always told myself that when you become a coach, cut everything.” This mindset has led him to limit his engagement with social media and external criticism.

Despite the pressure of his new role, which includes an upcoming Premier Sports Cup final against St Mirren on March 10, Nancy remains optimistic. He revealed that his mother has expressed concern over the strain of his new responsibilities, noting, “My mum told me that I have bags [under my eyes]. I said, ‘Yeah, mummy, I just came in, jet-lagged, trying to anticipate everything.'”

Nancy is focused on adapting to the culture at Celtic and aims to implement his playing philosophy effectively. He stated, “I try to open my eyes to understand the culture. Try to open my eyes to also understand the context.” His commitment to the team’s performance illustrates his determination to maximize their chances of success in both domestic and European competitions.

As Celtic prepares for a crucial week ahead, Nancy’s ability to navigate criticism and maintain a clear focus on his coaching duties will be key to the club’s aspirations in the league and cup competitions.
