Coleg Cambria achieved remarkable success at the WorldSkills UK National Finals, where eight of its top learners and apprentices competed. The event, often referred to as the “Skills Olympics,” took place in Wales for the first time, attracting over 400 of the UK’s finest apprentices across five venues. The competitors showcased their talents in more than 40 skill areas, including Engineering, Construction, Beauty Therapy, Hospitality, and the Creative Industries.

The athletes from Coleg Cambria, representing both Wrexham and Deeside, encountered a series of demanding challenges crafted by industry experts. These tasks were designed to assess their technical skills, precision, teamwork, and ability to perform under pressure. The outstanding achievements for Coleg Cambria included several medals, contributing to a record-breaking year for Wales.

Strong Performance by Team Wales

Wales fielded its largest-ever contingent of 122 competitors, who collectively secured 57 medals. North Wales learners, including those affiliated with Coleg Cambria and partner employers such as Airbus UK, earned two Gold, three Silver, four Bronze, and two Highly Commended awards.

Robert Jones, Skills Competition Lead at Coleg Cambria, highlighted the extensive preparation involved in achieving these results. He stated, “This would not have been possible if it were not for the specialist workshops, bespoke training, pressure tests, and a high calibre of training delivered by our technical training officers, lecturers, and training managers who have been a key part of their journey from competition entry to the national finals.”

Lisa Radcliffe, Assistant Principal for Technical Studies at Deeside, expressed pride in the learners’ accomplishments. “Each medal represents countless hours of hard work and the unwavering commitment these learners have shown to mastering their craft. We are immensely proud of their achievements and inspired by the bright futures they are creating through skill, determination, and excellence,” she remarked.

Individual Highlights and Future Opportunities

Among the standout participants were Aircraft Maintenance learner Patrick Dunne, and CNC milling specialists Jo Arrowsmith and Tomos Roberts. The success of their team reflects the exceptional level of training at Coleg Cambria, as noted by Jamie Mapp-Jones, Curriculum Director for Full-time Apprenticeships. He said, “These results highlight the exceptional standard of skills training at Coleg Cambria and the dedication of our learners, staff, and employer partners.”

Gold medallist Robert Jones reflected on his journey, sharing his determination to excel. “After taking gold at Skills Competition Wales and Silver at Nationals, I was determined to go for gold this time. The experience has been invaluable – representing Wales makes me so proud,” he remarked.

The medallists from this year’s event now have the opportunity to join Squad UK, potentially representing their country at future international WorldSkills competitions. This pathway opens doors for further development and recognition on a global stage.
