Gerrard Declines Rangers Offer as Club Pursues New Head Coach

Steven Gerrard has decided to withdraw from discussions to become the head coach of Rangers, marking a significant turn in the club’s ongoing search for leadership. The former Liverpool captain was the preferred choice among fans to succeed Russell Martin, but timing and personal circumstances influenced his decision.
Gerrard, aged 45, previously enjoyed a successful stint at Rangers, leading the team to win the Scottish Premiership in 2021, effectively halting Celtic’s run for ten consecutive titles. His affinity for the club and its supporters remains strong, and he expressed a sense of unfinished business during talks held in London.
Despite initial constructive discussions, Gerrard’s current family situation in Bahrain and the challenges facing Rangers complicated the potential return. Although he was reportedly impressed with the club’s ownership and their vision, he ultimately felt that this was not the right moment for him to rejoin the team.
As Rangers continue their search for a new head coach, they have a shortlist that includes several candidates, notably former Sheffield Wednesday boss Danny Rohl. Rohl, who previously managed Sheffield Wednesday to a mid-table finish in the Sky Bet Championship, has also worked as an assistant at prominent clubs such as RB Leipzig and Bayern Munich.
The club’s current predicament is concerning. Rangers expended approximately £34 million on player acquisitions over the past summer but have struggled to compete effectively this season. They failed to qualify for the Champions League and are currently positioned eighth in the Scottish Premiership, trailing leaders Hearts by eleven points and rivals Celtic by nine.
Rangers’ assistant coach Matt Gill and first-team coach Mike Williamson were also dismissed after a brief tenure of just 123 days. In the interim, under-19 coach Steven Smith, a former player for the club, is overseeing first-team training. He will be joined by B team coach Brian Gilmour, goalkeeping coach Sal Bibbo, and head of performance Rhys Owen, who were all appointed under Martin.
While the club prioritizes finding a new head coach, it is evident they are keen on establishing a more structured approach to management. This transition is being guided by CEO Patrick Stewart and sporting director Kevin Thelwell. Interestingly, Graham Potter, the former West Ham manager, and Gary O’Neil, ex-boss of Wolves, were also considered but are reportedly not in the running now.
Another potential candidate is Bo Svensson, the former manager of Union Berlin, who is thought to be among those in the mix. Additionally, there are names like former Rangers defender Kevin Muscat and ex-Southampton boss Ralph Hasenhuttl, though it remains unclear if they will make it to the final shortlist.
Rangers chairman Andrew Cavenagh, who led the recent US takeover of the club, and vice-chairman Paraag Marathe are actively meeting with various candidates. They are supported by 49ers Enterprises technical director Gretar Steinsson, alongside Stewart and Thelwell, as they navigate the recruitment process.
As Rangers prepare for their next match against Dundee United at Ibrox, the search for a suitable head coach continues to be a priority. The club aims to find someone who can lead them back to competitive success in Scottish football.
