Belfast Giants defenceman Karl Boudrias is focused on enhancing his team’s defensive play as they prepare for a critical weekend of matches against the Manchester Storm and Cardiff Devils. Boudrias, who recently rejoined the Giants, is eager to build on their recent success as they aim for a sixth consecutive win.

After receiving a call to re-sign with the Giants, Boudrias quickly made arrangements to return to Northern Ireland. Within hours of signing his contract, he was en route to the airport, having to inform Ron Choules, head coach of the Trois-Rivières Lions, that he would not be joining the ECHL team as planned. Choules was supportive of Boudrias’s decision, allowing him to make the switch to the Giants, where he was ready to compete at a higher level.

Boudrias reflected on the transition, stating, “I had maybe two hours to do my luggage and just say goodbye to my family and friends. That was it, I was already gone.” This swift move saw him participating in a match against Swiss elite team Lausanne in the Champions Hockey League just days later. He remarked on the challenges of playing in Switzerland, noting the increased pace and decision-making demands compared to the UK’s Elite Ice Hockey League (EIHL).

The off-season was tumultuous for the 25-year-old Canadian, who initially believed he would not return to the Giants after a successful campaign that saw them clinch two titles. This uncertainty led him to sign with Trois-Rivières, but injuries within the Giants’ roster prompted a change of plans. Now back with the Giants, Boudrias has quickly re-integrated into the team, contributing significantly with eight assists in 19 games this season.

Defensive Improvements Drive Recent Success

Following a shaky start to the season, the Giants have demonstrated significant defensive improvements, which coincide with their recent winning streak. Under the guidance of head coach Adam Keefe, the team has won five of their last six matches, pushing their record to 9-3-1 and positioning them fourth in the league standings. Despite trailing the Sheffield Steelers by seven points, the Giants have three games in hand, keeping their playoff aspirations alive.

Boudrias acknowledged the early-season challenges, explaining, “At the start of the season, we had a lot of injured players. There’s a lot of mixing up in between those pairings.” This inconsistency made it difficult for the team to establish a solid defensive rhythm. However, with players returning from injury, the team has focused on refining their defensive strategies: “We wanted to be better defensively, watch videos, and work on a couple of things. Now we’re rolling.”

The upcoming matches against Manchester and Cardiff are pivotal. Boudrias recognizes the importance of maintaining momentum, stating, “Every weekend in this League there’s no games off. Every weekend is pretty big.” He highlighted the challenges posed by both opponents, emphasizing the need for a strong start against Manchester, which has a reputation for being a tough venue.

Today’s matchup against the Storm and tomorrow’s clash with the Devils will test the Giants’ progress. Boudrias remains optimistic about their chances, noting the significance of securing both wins. “It would be really good to get those two wins for sure,” he added, looking ahead to the demanding schedule.

As the Giants aim to solidify their position in the league, Boudrias’s commitment to improving their defensive play will be crucial in their quest for continued success.
