Key Prosecutors Skip Telekom Case Hearing, Sparking Outrage

Significant figures in Montenegro’s judiciary failed to attend a crucial hearing regarding the contentious Telekom case, causing frustration among lawmakers. The absence of Milorad Marković, the Chief State Prosecutor, along with Vladimir Novović, the Principal Special Prosecutor, and Ana Perović Vojinović, the acting prosecutor, has raised questions about accountability within the prosecution.

The hearing, organized by the Committee for Political System, Justice, and Administration, aimed to discuss the prosecution’s actions that led to the dismissal of a criminal complaint involving allegations of abuse of official position, bribery, and the formation of a criminal organization during the sale of the former state enterprise Telekom. Lawmakers from the Europe Now Movement, including Vasilije Čarapić, Darko Dragović, and Draš̌en Petrić, initiated the hearing to scrutinize the prosecution’s handling of the case.

During the session, Nikola Zirojević criticized the absence of the top prosecutors, stating that it was “obvious that no one wanted to participate in this circus.” He expressed disappointment, emphasizing that it was shameful for the committee to receive no communication from the three officials, who hold significant positions.

Zirojević articulated that the lack of participation from the prosecutors indicates a deeper issue within the judiciary, suggesting that they lack the courage to confront pressing matters. Another lawmaker, Jovan Vučurović, echoed these sentiments, labeling the non-attendance as scandalous, particularly given that the Telekom case has become time-barred. He highlighted the importance of communication, asserting that it was unacceptable for the prosecutors to neglect the committee’s invitation without even sending a letter.
