London Spirit Defeats Oval Invincibles to Boost Knockout Chances
London Spirit enhanced their chances of reaching the knockout stages of The Hundred with a convincing eight-wicket victory over city rivals Oval Invincibles at the Kia Oval on August 15, 2023. The match saw an exceptional performance from the Spirit’s bowling unit, which restricted the Invincibles to a total of 108 runs for the loss of eight wickets in their allotted 100 balls.
The Spirit’s captain, Charlie Dean, and seamer Eva Gray were instrumental in this triumph, both claiming two wickets for just 12 runs. The Invincibles, who have been eliminated from the competition, struggled to find momentum throughout their innings, with Marizanne Kapp being the top scorer at 32 runs off 25 balls.
In response, London Spirit chased down the target with relative ease, reaching 113 runs for the loss of only two wickets in just 62 balls. Kira Chathli was the standout performer with the bat, scoring an impressive 53 runs off 29 deliveries, including a six to bring up her half-century. She was ably supported by Georgia Redmayne, who contributed 42 runs from 30 balls. The match concluded with Charli Knott guiding the Spirit to victory with a significant margin of 38 balls remaining.
The victory is particularly crucial for London Spirit following defeats in their previous two matches. They now sit four points ahead of Manchester Originals in fourth place, while the result has also dashed the hopes of Trent Rockets for qualifying for the eliminator stage. The Spirit must now rely on the Originals to lose to Northern Superchargers in their upcoming match on Tuesday, August 22, 2023, to secure their place in the next round.
Dean’s decision to bowl first proved to be a pivotal factor in the match, as the Spirit’s bowling attack executed their plans with remarkable precision. The innings began with debutant Kate Coppack nearly claiming a wicket with her opening delivery. Although Meg Lanning edged a chance that was dropped by wicketkeeper Redmayne, the Spirit bowlers remained disciplined.
The opening powerplay saw Dean and Gray maintain tight control, conceding only seven runs in the final 15 balls. Following a steady start from the Invincibles, Lanning’s dismissal by Dean shifted the momentum. Gray’s exceptional bowling further contributed to the pressure, as she maintained accuracy, with 75% of her deliveries targeting the stumps.
As wickets fell at regular intervals, the Spirit’s fielders showcased their skills, including Dean’s remarkable one-handed catch, which was a highlight of the match. By the end of the inning, the Invincibles were unable to post a competitive total, setting the stage for Spirit’s successful chase.
The next match day will feature another derby as Northern Superchargers take on Manchester Originals at Headingley. Fans can catch the action live on BBC Two and BBC iPlayer, with coverage of the women’s match starting at 14:45 BST, followed by the men’s match at 18:00 BST. Ball-by-ball commentary will also be available on BBC Radio 5 Sports Extra and the BBC Sport website and app.
